HEINRICH LEFLER (1863-1919) JUBILÄUMS KUNSTAUSSTELLUNG. 1898. 47 1/4x34 3/4 inches, 120x88 1/4 cm. S. Czeiger, Vienna. Condition B: extensive overpainting, restored losses, repaired tears and restoration in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Lefler was a painter, commercial graphic designer and book illustrator. He was a member of Vienna's Künstlerhaus, joined the Secession and became a founding member of the Hagenbund in 1900. He often worked with his brother-in-law and fellow Secession member Josef Urban, and was in charge of set design at the Vienna Opera under Gustav Mahler from 1900-1903. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Kaiser Franz Josef's ascension to the throne, Vienna spent most of 1898 celebrating the Jubilee in various ways. This poster was made for an exhibition by the members of the Künstlerhaus, which was held one year after the founding of the more famous Secession movement. Here, the manner in which Lefler depicts the jewelry and ornamentation clearly indicates his awareness of the Secession movement. This is the larger format.- 1,800

EMANUEL JOSEF MARGOLD (1888-1962) RUDOLFINUM / AUSSTELLUNG DES VEREINES DEUTSCHER BILDENDER KÜNSTLER IN BÖHMEN. 1907. 41 3/4x31 1/2 inches, 106x80 cm. Albert Berger, Vienna. Condition B+: tears, creases and abrasions in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds; light time-staining along seam. Two-sheets. Paper. Margold was an interdisciplinary artist in the truest sense among the Weiner Werkstatte greats. Schooled as a woodworker in Bohemia and at the School of Applied Arts in Mainz, he went on to become a student of Josef Hoffmann at Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, later becoming Hoffmann's assistant and joining the Wiener Werkstatte. Though Margold's name and work have not resonated nearly as much as some of his peers, his textile, ceramic, jewelry and graphic designs all bear the powerful and attractive hallmarks of the best Werkstatte designs, many with a strong resemblance to the work of Hoffmann himself. He also did work with product packaging and interior design. In 1911, Margold left Vienna for the Darmstadt Artists' Colony. Although printed in Vienna, this poster advertises an exhibition in Prague of German artists. rare.- 6,000

The magazine used this same illustration for its cover from at least 1898 to 1905, with changes only in the two text blocks. Published / Exhibited Hallstatt 20K+ Gold Bracelet: Central Europe, Germany and Austria, Danube River Basin, Eastern Hallstatt culture, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. A stunning, and I mean STUNNING gold bracelet - comprised of 84% gold, equivalent to 20K+ and quite substantial in weight! The design is lovely, featuring a 'coiled' central passage flanked by hourglass-shaped appliques with bosses adorning the terminals as well as centers - and three circular appliques along the bangle, each with an impressed symbolic motif. Finally the band is convex in form with everted ridged borders. This bracelet was recently exhibited in "Dressed to Kill in Love and War: Splendor in the Ancient World" (see below). Curator Sarah E. Cox presented it in the "Dressed to Impress" section of this exhibition. According to Dr. Cox, "All classes of women in the ancient world wore jewelry, which was considered both as adornment and as visible evidence of wealth. Many of the surviving pieces, particularly earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, were preserved because they were buried with the deceased. Others were accidentally lost in baths or toilets, or due to the vicissitudes of nature and war. " Size: opening measures 2. 5" W x 2" H (6. 4 cm x 5. 1 cm); band is . 5" W (1. 3 cm); weight: 37. 9 grams Size:. . Hallstatt culture developed from the earlier Urnfield culture, and would progress into the later La Tene culture, which is often called Celtic. Da Mei & Wen Lin (20th C. ) "Red Tulip": Da Mei & Wen Lin (Chinese, 20th C. ) "Red Tulip" Stamped lower right. Original Watercolor on Rice Paper. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U. S. 29c Tulip stamp issued April 5, 1991. . . This graceful garden flower, which we traditionally associate with the Netherlands, is actually an exotic native of Asia Minor. The first bulbs found in Europe came to Vienna, Austria, from Constantinople in Turkey. Resembling the Turkish turbans for which they were named, the beautiful blossoms achieved instant notoriety. A passionate interest in the flower resulted, and by the 17th century the tulip reigned as the most popular flower in many European countries. Hardest hit by "tulipomania" was Holland, where Dutch citizens invested in tulips much like modern speculators invest in stocks or real estate. Many lost their entire fortunes during this horticultural craze, and the Dutch government eventually passed legislation to regulate bulb trade. Tulip cultivation remains a vital industry in the Netherlands, where hundreds of thousands of cup-shaped flowers herald the advent of spring and the opening of the season's bulb markets. The Royal Dutch General Bulbgrower's Association zealously monitors hybridization processes throughout the world and requires all hybrid species to undergo years of intensive testing before inclusion in the international register of tulips. . .
