(A Rainy Evening In Ueno Park, Tokyo), oban shin-hanga woodcut, depicting the old Tenno-ji, a five-storied pagoda [temple] built in 1644, burnt in 1771 and rebuilt 19 years later. Signed, with red seal, Watanabe seal in margin, title and date of 1934 in other margin, unframed, tipped to mount inside paper mat, as issued, 15 1/4" x 10 1/4" sheet, 14 1/2" x 20" mount. Very good condition.

He was a student at the Royal Academy School of Architecture in the 1900s and was elected as an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1902. By 1903 he was a student and assistant at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (later known as the Central School of Art and Design) in London where William Lethaby was principal and a great influence on him. He then oversaw the design of the new school in Southampton Row from 1905-8. From here he became an architect for London County Council and was involved with many London societies, and as a founding member of the Kelmscott Fellowship, a forerunner to The William Morris Society. His large and varied collection was a reflection of his wide interest in the arts. His archive was purchased by The William Morris Society in 2005.

SHINNYO DO ENGI, A JAPANESE WOODCUTSHINNYO DO ENGI, A JAPANESE WOODCUT BOOK, C.1693 The Emperor Go-Kashiwabara, et al.; SHINNYO DO ENGI, "The Origin of the Shinnyo Do Temple in Kyoto," with calligraphy by Kitamuki Unchiko and illustrations after Kaiho Yuchiku (Kyoto: 1693) 3 vols, 10 7/8 x 7 5/8 in.; traditional Japanese fukurotoji binding, gray covers applied title labels; gray brocade cloth chitsu folding case. Based on a manuscript scroll written in the early 16th century, this updates the account with calligraphy and lively black and white illustrations to tell a story of religious experience in the midst of civil war. In 1693, an ancient statue of the Buddha, which had been hidden away during the Onin Wars, was returned to the temple.
