FRANTZ CHARLET "TRANQUILITY" WATERCOLOR PAINTINGFrantz Charlet (Belgian, 1862-1928). Watercolor on artist's paper painting titled "Tranquility," depicting a quiet and serene pastoral scene with a mother sits knitting in the grass by the water’s edge while her daughter watches the sailboats going by, ca. 1895-1905. This work is a placid look at provincial life in a quaint waterfront town. Signed along the lower left.
Lot Essay:
Charlet was a student of the Académie de Bruxelles and l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris and is known for his portraiture, landscape, and genre work. Along with a group of ten colleagues, Charlet founded Les XX in October of 1883. Les XX argued against established traditions and invited young, emerging artists from outside Belgium to exhibit with them. Artists who shared their aesthetic ideals and exhibited with the group included luminaries such as Toulouse Lautrec, John Singer Sargent, Claude Monet, and James McNeill Whistler. Les XX also believed strongly in the unity of the avant-garde and the inherent links between the different forms of the arts.
Tranquility is a beautiful work of art that comes in its original, wide profile, ornate, gesso frame.

Nicholas Brewer "Moon Light over Hell Gate N. Y. " Oil on Canvas: Nicholas R. Brewer (American, 1857-1949). Oil on canvas titled "Moon Light over Hell Gate N. Y. , " 1888. Signed and dated along the lower right; further signed, titled, and dated along the verso. This serene harborscape is a rare and lovely example of Brewer's work from his time in New York. . Born in a log cabin in Minnesota in 1857, Nicholas BrewerÃs work typifies his frontier spirit and love for the American landscape. He grew up on a farm, where his days were defined by hard work, but he still found the time to draw and paint in between chores. At the age of 18, he moved to St. Paul. He received some art training there from Henry Koempel, a local painter and decorator, and ended up marrying KoempelÃs daughter. He eked out a living for his swiftly growing family through portrait commissions and teaching. . In 1885, Brewer first traveled to New York, determined to make it as a serious artist. He received a small amount of training there; however, he remained primarily self-taught. He began receiving some success in New York, and continued spending winters there for much of his career. His work was included in several exhibitions, and he was inducted into the illustrious Salmagundi Club. In his later career, he traveled the United States, giving traveling lectures and exhibitions, as well as taking portrait commissions wherever he went. During one productive visit to Washington D. C. , Brewer even painted a portrait of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. . Unframed; height: 12 in x width: 18 in. Framed; 16 1/2 in x width: 22 1/2 in. Mark Schuler (B. 1951) "Flag over Yosemite": Mark Schuler (American, B. 1951) "Flag over Yosemite" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Maximum Card for the U. S. Flag Over Yosemite stamp issue of May 20, 1988. . . Serene and dreamlike in its misty dawns, and inviting all with lush, green meadows and giant trees, Yosemite National Park is among the most beautiful places on earth. People come by the thousands to experience this land apart from the cares of modern society. In 790, 000 acres of High Sierra and world-famous lower level giant sequoia groves, Yosemite offers the best of America's natural majesty. Her smooth, granite domes -- polished by 2, 000-foot thick glaciers many thousands of years ago -- and her steadfast, immovable mountains with thunderous falls cascading down, leave visitors breathless and awestruck. Thus, it is no wonder, that centuries of dreamers have found refuge in the land now called Yosemite National Park. The Indians called it Ahwahnee, meaning "deep, grassy valley. " And Horace Greeley noted it as, "The greatest marvel of the continent. " To Teddy Roosevelt, Yosemite was, "the most beautiful place in the world. " And to Writer/Naturalist John Muir, it was worthy of his praises for many, many years. Muir first saw Yosemite in a painting in 1863, and was drawn to it. Arriving in 1868, he spent six years haunting the area, exploring its precipices, scaling its spiraling cliffs, and he would write of its unequaled beauty the rest of his life. In fact, it was John Muir who led the fight to make Yosemite a protected National Park, preserving its countless wonders for centuries to come. . . Image Size: 9. 5 x 13. 5 in. . Chris Calle (B. 1961) "Bombing of Pearl Harbor": Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "WWII - Bombing of Pearl Harbor" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Cold Press Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U. S. 29c Pearl Harbor stamp issued September 3, 1991. . . The morning of December 7, 1941 was like so many in the tropics . quiet, almost lazy -- a Sunday. But less than two hours after dawn, it became a Sunday like no other. Before many of the American servicemen stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, had risen, the harbor and surrounding fields were under enemy air attack. The surprise was universal. The Japanese launched over one hundred eighty airplanes in the first wave from a point two hundred thirty miles north of Oahu. Striking with deadly efficiency, the planes hit Wheeler, Hickam and Bellows fields and pounded into American battleships anchored off Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. So shocking was this initial attack that only nine enemy planes were shot out of the once-serene tropical sky. The next wave came less than an hour later, pounding into crippled battleships and destroying grounded American aircraft. With one well-planned and flawlessly executed blow, the Japanese sent American naval power reeling. The carnage was incredible: 2, 403 American men and women were killed; the battleships U. S. S. Arizona, U. S. S. West Virginia, U. S. S. California, U. S. S. Utah and U. S. S. Oklahoma were knocked out of action; and only one quarter of the American aircraft were undamaged. It was a day which spurred the industrial might of a nation into action and sent United States servicemen into the arena of World War II. . . Image Size: 16. 5 x 12. 25 in. . Shannon Stirnweis (B. 1931) "Statue of Liberty": Shannon Stirnweis (American, B. 1931) "Statue of Liberty" Signed middle left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . The Lady, the Goddess, Miss Liberty -- she has been called many names, but she has always been the symbol of freedom. Our grand Lady of the Harbor evokes the hopes and dreams of all those who gaze upon her brilliant face and flock to her open shores. The Statue was a gift from France to the people of the United States -- whose striving for liberty and social justice helped inspire the French in their own search for liberty. To help bring the vision of the statue to reality, the French government enlisted the help of a young sculptor, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Initially given the name Liberty Enlightening the World, Bartholdi envisioned the statue to embody the everlasting spirit of Liberty, which would serve as an inspiration for all nations, for all peoples, for all times. After experimenting with several models, Bartholdi revealed the statue in her final form: a serene but forceful woman in classical garb, with an upheld torch of freedom, a crown of radiant light, with chains of bondage broken at her feet, and a sacred tablet inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence. Since her dedication in 1886, the Statue of Liberty has stood proudly in New York Harbor, beckoning the thousands of immigrants from faraway lands to her free and prospering shores. The story of over one hundred million Americans literally cannot be told apart from the story of the Statue of Liberty. . . Image Size: 13. 25 x 17. 25 in. . Overall Size: 18. 25 x 22 in. . Washington, George (1732-1799) Circular Letter Signed as President, Philadelphia, 1 March 1797. Laid paper bifolium inscribed on one page in a secretarial hand, inviting New York Senator John Laurance to the Presidential and Vice-Presidential swearing in ceremony of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in the Senate Chamber, with Washington's signature beneath; conjugate self-envelope with address, repaired, rare with full-size sheet and address sheet intact, one of eight known of the thirty-two originally sent, 8 x 10 in. "It appearing to me proper that the Senate of the United States should be convened on Saturday the fourth day of March instant; you are desired to attend in the Chamber of the Senate on that day, at eleven o'Clock in the forenoon, to receive any communications which the President of the United States may then have to lay before you, touching their interests." The dry language of the invitation belies the momentous nature of the moment. After careful preparation, with the publication of his Farewell Address, and much private political negotiation, Washington finally achieves his desire to retire from the office of the President. None of this was lost on Adams, naturally, who wrote to his wife about this "trying" and "solemn" ceremony. "[Washington's] Countenance was as serene and unclouded as the day. [...] He Seemed to me to enjoy a Tryumph over me. Methought I heard him think Ay! I am fairly out and you fairly in! See which of Us will be happiest" (Adams Family Papers: An Electronic Archive. Massachusetts Historical Society. https://www.masshist.org/digitaladams/). John Laurance (1750-1810) "had been the faithful adjutant-general of Washington, [and] a steady, fearless supporter of Hamilton. Laurance, an Englishman by birth, had settled in New York at an early period in life, and by his marriage to the daughter of Alexander McDougall, quickly came into conspicuous sympathy with the radical wing of the patriotic party. He will always be remembered in history as the judge-advocate of the court that tried Major Andre. He held office almost continuously from 1775 until his death in 1810, serving eight years in the army, one in the State Senate, six in Congress, four as judge of the United States District Court, and four as a United States senator, closing his honourable career as president pro tem. of that body." (Quoted from DeAlva Stanwood Alexander's A Political History of the State of New York, New York: Holt, 1906, vol. I, page 64). [Together with] a copy of the Connecticut Journal, Wednesday 15 March 1797, with the printed speeches of the inaugurees, toned, chipping, 16 1/2 x 9 3/4 in. The newspaper account includes Washington's speech, a description of the scene in and around the inauguration itself, and a detailed story on the banquet held in Washington's honor at O'Eller's Hotel in Philadelphia. Newton Reeve Howard (American/New Orleans, 1912-1984) , "The Palm Tree", 1976, oil on canvas board, signed and dated lower left, titled on frame, 16 in. x 12 in., framed. Note: Newton Reeve Howard was a New Orleans painter known for his serene landscapes of the marshes and bayous of South Louisiana. An avid duck hunter, fisherman and naturalist, Howard?s paintings evoke the calm solitude he found during countless hours of paddling through the marshes near Lafitte, Avery Island and in many other swampy settings of the region. Often recognized by New Orleans residents as the architect of Monkey Hill, a beloved city landmark located in the Audubon Zoo, Howard graduated from the Tulane University School of Architecture and was subsequently employed by the Federal Works Progress Administration to oversee improvements to the zoo during the Depression. After having difficulty finding work as an architect, Howard decided to embrace his lifelong love of painting and drawing and studied at the Chicago Institute of Art. When he returned to New Orleans, he joined Fitzgerald Advertising, where he served as the agency?s art director and designed regional and national campaigns for companies including Brown?s Dairy and Tabasco. The painting offered here speaks to Howard?s background in architecture and graphic design with a strong composition highlighting the natural elements of a single palm tree against an aging brick wall. The artist?s minimalist style and sense of quiet reflection is perfectly transposed onto this carefully chosen glimpse of city life. Zhan Jianjun (China, B. 1931): Zhan Jianjun (China, B. 1931) "Fog in the Stone Forest" Original oil on canvas painting. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting is an original unsigned oil on canvas by Zhan Jianjun that was commissioned directly by Helzer for Unicover. Helmuth Stone Gallery and Wind River Studios both guarantee the authenticity of this piece. This painting appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the China 8fen Fog in the Stone Forest stamp issue of September 18, 1981. . . Pearl gray light softens the stark outlines of rough cliff walls in China's famous Stone Forest, nature's wonderland carved in rock. Fantasy and enchantment are etched in these unusual stone formations, creating fantastic views and illusions through their everchanging shapes. In a silent, primeval sleep, these strange forms stand like ancient Druids, dark and mysterious. Wisps of fog cling to their rocky faces like spindrift, while a velvet mantle of clouds shrouds them in opaque serenity. Feathery vines garland their craggy ridges with mauve and violet fringe, bringing a delicate, fragile brightness to the lifeless, unreal forms. As haunted air entwines these stone ghosts of antiquity with a heather mist, one has the impression of being in another world, a world of mysterious secrets waiting to be uncovered. The infinity of patterns and hues of the rock formations in the Stone Forest opens a new world of boundless vision to the visitor. Indeed, what can be seen here is limited only by the imagination, varied by the subtle and shifting moods of the days and seasons. Split and carved as if by some magic power into fantastic and even grotesque shapes, the cliffs of China's Stone Forest are pictured in this artwork in a veiled mist. Imbued with the mystery and fantasy of nature, the age-old secrets of these mysterious formations await the thoughtful discovery of contemplation and imagination. . . Image Size: 27. 5 x 23. 5 in. . Zhan Jianjun (China, B. 1931): Zhan Jianjun (Chinese, B. 1931) "A Lake in the Stone Forest" Oil on Canvas painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . . This painting is an original unsigned oil on canvas by Zhan Jianjun that was commissioned directly by Unicover. Helmuth Stone Gallery and Wind River Studios both guarantee the authenticity of this piece. . This painting commissioned by James A. Helzer, originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the China 8fen Lake in the Stone Forest stamp issue of September 18, 1981. . . Only 120 kilometers southeast of the city of Kunming in China's remote Yunnan Province, the Stone Forest is surrounded by one of the most enchanting landscapes in all of China. Here in Yunnan, where the winter is never bitterly cold, nor the summer unbearably hot, a patchwork of sub-tropical valleys and basins spreads across the high plateau. Home to the rare golden monkey and the delicately beautiful camellia tree, Yunnan is a paradise of magnificent flora and fauna. Botanical gardens, zoos, primeval forests, and rare birds and animals cover the province like an ornate painted screen. Bordered on the south by the treacherous Indo-China border and on the west by the mighty mountains of Burma, this intoxicating, picturesque province is almost entirely mountainous. For centuries, far-away Yunnan served as a penal colony where enemies of political despots and war lords were easily banished. Distant and inaccessible, Yunnan's capital city of Kunming was the unofficial capital of Free China during wartime. Here Marco Polo was awed by the 2000 year-old "City of Spring, " abundant with flowers and sprinkled with scores of ornate temples and lavishly decorated pagodas. The medley of sights and sounds in Kunming, along with the enchanting landscape of Yunnan Province, are a fitting prelude to the strange and breathtaking sights of the Stone Forest. This beauty and wonder are reflected in a serene, limpid pool in the Stone Forest, portrayed in this artwork. . . Image Size: 27. 5 x 23. 5 in. . Overall Size: 28. 25 x 24 in. . Shannon Stirnweis (B. 1931) "Statue of Liberty": Shannon Stirnweis (American, B. 1931) "Statue of Liberty" Signed center left. The story of over one hundred million Americans literally cannot be told apart from the story of the Statue of Liberty. . . Image Size: 13. 25 x 16 in. . Overall Size: 18. 25 x 22 in. . Unframed. . Vladimir Beilin (20th C. ) "Sputnik": Vladimir Beilin (Russian, 20th C. ) "Sputnik" Original Fleetwood First Day cover watercolor painting. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Russia Sputnik in Orbit stamp issued May 29, 1992. . . On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union fired the shot that began the Space Race with the launch of Sputnik 1. This first earthshaking shot soon became a salvo, as it was quickly followed by Sputnik 11, carrying the dog Laika into orbit, and Sputnik 111, which had a payload of nearly 3, 000 pounds -- more than 15 times as great as Sputnik 1. Werner von Braun, the German scientist who led a U. S. rocket development team, summed up American response to the Soviet successes in space: "The reaction to these events had been profound. They triggered a period of self-appraisal rarely equaled in modem times. Overnight it became popular to question the bulwarks of our society . even the moral fiber of our people. " Insult was added to injury when the American answer to Sputnik, the tiny Vanguard I (derisively called a "grapefruit" by Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev), exploded on the launch pad, its 3. 2-pound payload plaintively broadcasting a homing signal from the Florida sands where it had fallen after the explosion. Orbiting serenely above a frustrated nation, Sputnik I continued to send a mocking signal to American scientists until November 14, 1958, when its batteries finally failed. Ten weeks later, it plummeted to Earth in an incandescent trail of flame. America's first artificial satellite was not to follow Sputnik into space until January 31, 1958, when Explorer I finally slipped the surly bonds of Earth. . . Image Size: 14 x 12 in. . 18TH C. JAPANESE GILT WOOD AVALOKITESHVARA FIGUREEast Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 18th to mid-19th century CE. This is a gorgeous wooden stature of Avalokitesvara, one of the most revered and celebrated bodhisattvas in Asia. Carved in the round and seated in full lotus position with multiple arms clasped in prayer, meditation, and outstretched forming mudra gestures - he exudes strength and tranquility. The surface is weathered with a dark patina, but remains of red and white pigments as well as glimmering gilt highlight his body. The verso of his spine has a large cavity opening for depositing slips of paper with prayers inside for devotional worship. He has the characteristically rounded face, serene downcast eyes, elongated ears, and a brimmed cap with a domed top. Avalokitesvara is a compassionate being with 108 avatars and many depictions throughout southeast and East Asia as both male or female as well as androgynous, as this iteration might be. An outstanding depiction with a wise and timeless presence that is perfect for display! Size: 10.75" L x 6.5" W x 11.5" H (27.3 cm x 16.5 cm x 29.2 cm)
Bodhisattvas are among the most compassionate beings in the universe, devoting themselves to saving the suffering and helping others achieve enlightenment and Buddhahood. Traditionally depicted as less austere than Buddhas with graceful postures and elegant garments, and this example even has remains of gilt. Bodhisattvas or Guanyin are associated with compassion and mercy - their long ears significant because they rescue all human beings by hearing their cries for help and the sounds of suffering.

Enrique Alferez (Mexican/New Orleans, 1901-1999) , "Vietnam", 1990, bronze, h. 47 in., wood base. Note: Born in Mexico in 1901, Enrique Alferez?s life spanned almost the entirety of the 20th century. Alferez settled in New Orleans in 1929, an eclectic city with a thriving art scene. In 1952, he met his wife ,Peggy Selway, at Lafitte?s Blacksmith Shop. Doug MacCash described their first meeting as such: ?Her porcelain skin, ice-blue eyes and straight blond hair shone against her black velvet dress, attracting the attention of the dark, handsome man carving the ham?with a machete.? The machete-wielding mystery man was Alferez, who was immediately smitten by this registered nurse from Harrisburg, PA. It took a year of wooing before she would agree to be his wife. The two would split their time between Mexico and New Orleans. Peggy proved to be the perfect counterbalance to the fiery artist. In Peggy he found an intellectual equal described as the artist?s ?other self.? She was a passionate person: ?? a rapacious reader, consuming countless books and periodicals, feeding her insatiable need for knowledge of current events.? She was also a vehement protestor of the Vietnam War, a feeling shared by her husband. Noted as a superlative example of Alferez's large-scale work, "Vietnam" on offer here is his own poignant take on one of he and Peggy?s more fervent causes. This remarkable large-scale installation bronze, which has been on display in the Helis Foundation Sculpture Garden since 2015, is the largest sculpture by Alferez offered at auction to date. Different than many of Alferez's figures, which are often serenely still, this work illustrates the artist's remarkable ability to insinuate movement and action through the rigid medium of bronze. The woman, a mother, is caught mid-stride carrying her baby to safety from unseen foes as she flees. The kinetic frenzy of the wind and war-ravaged backdrop is implied through the expression on her face, the baby?s legs akimbo in her embrace, and the flowing rendering of her hair and clothing. In focusing on the mother and child, the horrors and destruction of war are implied, albeit rather poetically, through Alferez?s elegant style. The resulting effect is a sensitive and moving masterpiece, replete with beauty and meaning. Ref.: MacCash, Doug. ?Peggy Alferez?. The Times Picayune. Aug. 22, 2006. www.obits.nola.com. Newton Reeve Howard (American/New Orleans, 1912-1984) , "Untitled (Marsh Burn Geese)", 1970, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, exhibition label with artist, title, date and biography on frame, 29 in. x 41 7/8 in., framed . Provenance: Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Walter D. Cockerham. Exh.: "Newton Howard: Painter of the Sportsman's Paradise", Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, LA, Sept. 6, 2018 - Jan. 13, 2019. Note: Newton Reeve Howard was a New Orleans painter known for his serene landscapes of the marshes and bayous of South Louisiana. An avid duck hunter, fisherman and naturalist, Howard?s paintings evoke the calm solitude he found during countless hours of paddling through the marshes near Lafitte, Avery Island and many other swampy settings of the region. Described by those who knew him as a stoic gentleman who captivated many with a quiet charm and intellect, Howard painted countless oil, acrylic and watercolor works which emphasized where the bayou waters met the horizon, broken only by a slow-moving shrimp trawler or the flutter of bird wings over the marsh. The painting offered here perfectly captures the artist?s minimalist style and sense of quiet reflection. John Benson (B. 1949) "Statue of Liberty": John Benson (American, B. 1949) "Statue of Liberty" Signed middle right. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. . The story of over one hundred million Americans literally cannot be told apart from the story of the Statue of Liberty. . . Image Size: 13 x 18 in. . Overall Size: 20 x 26 in. . Unframed. . Exhibited: Donald Morris Gallery, MI Biography from the Archives of askART: Known as a colorist focused on serene mood, harmony, and rounded shapes, Milton Avery was primarily a self-taught painter whose work combining abstraction and realism suggests dialogue between line, shape, muted color, and subdued emotions. Most of his subjects were either marine scenes or figure studies. Although never associated with a particular movement, Avery was a key modernist who influenced succeeding generations of artists including Color Field painters Mark Rothko and Adolph Gottlieb. Born in Altmar, New York, Avery studied art in Hartford at the Connecticut League of Art Students before settling in New York City in 1925. 1944 was a watershed year for Avery, largely because of a new gallery association with Paul Rosenberg in New York. Rosenberg had fled to New York from Europe with both a strong interest and inventory of avant-garde paintings, which he wanted to enhance. In addition to this collection, he agreed to buy twenty-five of Avery's paintings twice a year, which meant that Avery did not have to worry about money and could focus on being creative. With this new freedom, he became much more prolific, and his style changed from a brushy, painterly application and graphic detailing to denser, more even areas of flattened color within delineated forms. As his career continued, he became more and more focused on concentrated color within simple, broadly contoured shapes. He perfected the technique of applying thin washes of paint to create veiled fields of color. In January, 1949, he had an heart attack that left him physically weak for the remainder of his life, and he died in 1965, having suffered a second heart attack three years earlier. Sources include: Matthew Baigell, Dictionary of American Art Michael David Zellman, 300 Years of American Art Note submitted February 2005 from Matthew Weseley whose source is Barbara Haskell's catalogue to the 1982 Whitney Museum retrospective of Avery's works. Milton Avery was born in 1885, not 1893. He lied about his age, since he was so much older than his wife, Sally, so it came as a surprise to her when Barbara Haskell, who curated the retrospective at The Whitney, told her that her late husband was actually born in 1885. Many publications still list his birthdate as 1893, though it's incorrect. etching Dimensions: 7"H x 6 3/4"W (plate), 15 1/4"H x 14 1/4"W (frame), 13 7/8"H x 10 15/16"W (sheet)

Chuck Ripper (B. 1929) "Florida Manatee": Chuck Ripper (American, B. 1929) "Florida Manatee" Signed lower right. Original Gouache/Watercolor painting on Masonite. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . . This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 32c Florida Manatee stamp issued October 2, 1996. . . Slow-moving and serene, the manatee is the graceful cow of the sea. Found in shallow coastal waters, estuaries and slow-flowing rivers, it spends its lazy days grazing on aquatic vegetation just beneath the water's surface. Massive, thick-skinned and nearly hairless, the manatee's slate-grey body sports paddlelike forelimbs and a spatulate tail -- a figure which, ironically, likely gave rise to the folklore of mermaids. Not particularly gregarious, the manatee usually lives singly or in small family groups, but can sometimes form herds of up to a score. With no natural predators, this ocean giant has retained a placid temperament and won't fight to defend itself or its calf. Unfortunately, since Spanish explorers first came to the Florida region in the 16th century, man has become the manatee's first true enemy. Although hunting this peaceful creature has been outlawed for over a century, the encroachment of mankind on the manatee's habitat still threatens its existence. Many fall victim to the unforgiving blades of outboard motors, while others often drown in the intake gates of water control structures. Still others are scared away from their warm-water havens by human intruders, fleeing into colder waters where a stay of only a few hours often proves lethal to these temperature-sensitive mammals. With only some 1, 000 manatees left in the wild, mankind must take special care to preserve these gentle giants of the Caribbean. . . Image Size: 14. 5 x 12. 5 in. . Shannon Stirnweis (B. 1931) "Statue of Liberty": Shannon Stirnweis (American, B. 1931) "Statue of Liberty" Signed lower left. The story of over one hundred million Americans literally cannot be told apart from the story of the Statue of Liberty. . . Image Size: 13. 25 x 18. 25 in. . Overall Size: 18. 25 x 22 in. . Wu Jiankun (B. 1938) "Yellow Dragon Pool": Wu Jiankun (Chinese, B. 1935) "Yellow Dragon Pool in Lushan Mountains" Stamped lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Rice Paper Glued to Heavy Paper. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the China 8fen Yellow Dragon Pool stamp issued July 20, 1981. . . Situated amid the serenity of soaring mountain peaks and fresh-scented pine forests is a testament to China's longstanding fascination with the mythical dragon: Yellow Dragon Pool. Known as lung, Chinese dragons, the gods of rain and water, also symbolized the power of the Emperor himself, the Son of Heaven. Dragons were often thought to serve as custodians of imperial treasures, as evidenced by the magnifient Nine-Dragon Wall guarding the royal Forbidden City in Peking. The Emperor T'ang, who ruled in 766 B. C. , made a pottery figure of a dragon so that the clouds would come to his dry land. Thus, the Chinese saying "Earthen dragons cause the rain to come. " The Duke of Cheh in the land of Chu apparently liked dragons since he had them painted on all his walls and trays. Tzu-kao, too, exclaimed how much he liked dragons and had them painted all over his house. When a dragon came to pay him a friendly visit, Tzu-kao was so frightened he is said to have tripped over the dragon's tail while trying to run away from it. The dragon did him no harm, however, and the following summer was unusually wet. When good emperors ruled, natural forces were thought to be in harmony with the Empire and thus, the rain fell at the right times and places. The Yellow Dragon Pool of the Lushan Mountains stands as a silent reminder of the Chinese fascination with this beautiful creature of myth and legend. . . Image Size: 16. 25 x 13. 5 in. .
