Battle of Lexington and Concord Militia Captain Gould Topsfield, Mass. Minuteman: American Revolution. Battle of Lexington and Concord Captain Gould Minuteman of Topsfield, Mass. Militia Discharges a Debt Due for Labor. April 25, 1745-Dated Colonial America, Manuscript Indenture Document Signed, "Joseph Gould, " (1726-1803) (of The Capt. Joseph Gould House) at Topsfield (Massachusetts), Very Fine. This Colonial era Document measures about 7. 5" x 5. 75", 1 page, being an official "Labor Contract" nicely written in rich brown on fairly clean laid British Crown watermarked period laid paper, Signed by a historic American Partiot and "Minuteman" who later, (was voted by the citizens of Topsfield) Captain Joseph Gould, promises that after Aaron Hubbard, in part:. . ". faithfull Performance of four or five days work done for me in planting by the above said Aron Hubbard and Two months more of Labor in haytime. will Deliver up to him the Indenture that I have against him. ". . Also Signed as witnessed by John and Simon Gould, and also Signed by "Aaron Hubbard. " Joseph Gould was a farmer who, on December 5, 1774 was elected Captain by the citizens of Topsfield of one of the two Militia Companies. It is recorded that Captain Gould was one of those who, on April 19, 1775, left his plow in midfurrow and galloped off to Lexington and Concord to help drive the Redcoats back to Boston fighting all the way forcing their bloody retreat. Born in Topsfield, Essex, Massachusetts, USA on 4 Nov 1726 to Captain Joseph Gould and Priscila B Perkins (Gould). Joseph Gould (Major) married Elizabeth Emerson and had 12 children. He passed away on 9 Jun 1803 in Topsfield, Essex, Massachusetts, USA. . The Capt. Joseph Gould House is a historic First Period house at 129 Washington Street in Topsfield, Massachusetts. It is a 2. 5 story frame house that is six bays wide and two rooms deep. The oldest part of the house, the eastern three bays, may have been built in the late 17th century; it achieved the present footprint with an addition in the early 18th century of the western bays. The house is distinctive among First Period houses in the region because its original portion was built from the start to be two rooms deep, when most houses of the period started out one room deep and were extended to the rear later. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Captain Joseph Gould Barn -- "To learn about this barn is to step back into American history. It was built about 1710 and originally stood at 129 Washington Street, about a mile from its present site. It was built by the Goulds, one of the founding familes of Topsfield. Zaccheus Gould came from England about 1639 and took an active role in creating the town, then known as New Meadows, and was one of its leading citizens. The barn's owner during the Revolutionary War was Joseph Gould, Zaccheus's great-grandson. . SEE: https://www. angelfire. com/journal2/n_woodhead/Zaccheus_Gould_1. html. . Needlework Band Pattern Sampler, "Sarah Baker 1664," worked in polychrome silk threads in predominantly green, blue, yellow, red, and pink in a range of stitches incorporating intricate bands of delicately embroidered flowers, leaves, and acorns, over two bands of alphabets and upper case inscription "SARAH BAKER 1664" on a natural linen ground, 31 3/4 x 7 1/4 in. mounted in a later molded wood frame.
Note: This sampler is believed to have been stitched by Sarah Baker who was born April 24, 1650, in Roxbury, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Thomas (1608-1684) and Elizabeth Baker. Sarah married Sebas Jackson on April 16, 1671. Sebas was born in 1642 at sea to Edward and Frances Jackson on their way to America from England. Sebas' father amassed a substantial fortune as a nail maker, and over some time became the largest landowner in Newton, Massachusetts. He gave his son Sebas 150 acres in Newton and built him a house. Sebas and Sarah had six children and when Sebas died at the age of 48 in 1690, Sarah remained in the homestead with five of her six children. Sarah died in 1726. Over the years the homestead remained in the family until it was donated to the City of Newton and is now the home of the Newton History Museum.
Literature: A similar sampler is portrayed in Betty Ring's book Girlhood Embroidery: American Samplers, Pictorial Needlework 1650-1850, Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., 1993, Vol. 1, p. 29. The sampler was stitched by Mary Hollingsworth (1652-1694) of Salem, Massachusetts. Ring writes that Mary "was the only child of a wealthy Salem merchant, and she is said to have studied with 'Madame Piedmonte...a celebrated instructress of that day in Boston.'" Because of the similarities between these samplers it is possible that Sarah Baker studied with the same schoolmistress.
Toning, light stains, some fading of silk threads.

JAMES GOMME (1817) ASKEATON CASTLE ON THE RIVER DEEL COUNTY LIMERICK, signed, dated 1817, inscribed ASKEYON [sic] and Hammersmith verso, panel 12 x 17.5cm The artist could well be identified with James Gomme (1726-1825) a furniture maker of High Wycombe and Hammersmith and a keen member of the Society of Antiquaries. A somewhat eccentric figure, he was a friend of Edmund Burke and issued his own token coinage. Clearly by an untrained hand, but given the amount of detail depicted, the present panel is obviously by one interested in the architectural heritage so beloved of that learned society. It is likely that it was copied, perhaps from an engraving, which may explain the misspelt title. A remarkably similar view of the castle, painted by Samuel Frederick Brocas (c1792-1847) is illustrated Laffan (W, editor), Painting Ireland: topographical views from Glin Castle, 2006, plt 45. Mellors & Kirk is very grateful for the assistance of Andrew Moore of the National Gallery of Ireland in the cataloguing of this lot.
