There is minor rubbing/soiling in places along the lower sheet edge. There is pale time staining at the sheet edges and on the reverse the paper tone has slightly darkened. The work has been taped to the overmat with brown paper tape along the reverse of the upper sheet edge. Overall this work is generally in good condition.

Paper label attached to the verso of the backing board hand written in French "Painting E. Buffet personally owned by Mle. Jeanne Lacroix". The French "chanteuse" (1866-1934) performed at Les Ambassadeurs in Paris; Metivet's famous lithographic poster shows the same composition with variations in the text.
Lucien Metivet was a highly successful poster artist and contributor to Parisian humor magazines like Le Rire and La Semaine de Suzette. He was a master in caricature humorous illustration and lithographic techniques. After his debut exhibition with the Salon des Artistes Francais he published a series of satirical drawings in the Critique. He soon abandoned that style in favour of poster art and became one of the most prominent illustrators of the 19th century. He became one of the leading illustrators of Le Rire and in 1926 he illustrated the humorous tales of Balzac. Acquired from the Parisian estate apprx. 30 years ago.
