- Portrait of Paul Revere After Peale
Portrait of Paul Revere After Peale Oil on Canvas Early 19th century American. A portrait of Paul Revere either after the American portraitist Charles Willson Peale or his son Rembrandt Peale unsigned with inscription Paul Revere 1779-1780 C.W.P. on verso and additional label with inscription This portrait of Lieutent Colonel Paul Revere was set for by Lieutenent Colonel Revere of ? 1779-1780 and was painted by the painter C.W.P. for by Charles Warren / William Sticney glued to verso; 68 x 54 in.Although this work is not by Charles Willson Peale as the back inscription alleges it seems highly likely that this work was done after Peale. Neither Charles nor his son Rembrandt ever painted a portrait of Paul Revere. However the portrait of Revere seems to be modeled after the 1772 Militia portrait of Washington housed at Washington & Lee University Lexington VA. There is a noted similarity between Peale's portrait head of Washington and this example of Revere's. Condition: Large hole in top section of painting.
