- BRONZE FIGURAL CLOCK CIRCA 1870 34 ½"
BRONZE FIGURAL CLOCK CIRCA 1870 34 ½" x 25" x 11" Massive bronze figural clock in gilt finish, neoclassical style with mythological figures of Eros and Diana. The artist's theme of the clock appears to be based on the story of Apollo and Eros. The art of this clock portrays the account of Diana placing a laurel wreath on the head of Eros, a symbol of victory, for his over Apollo, according to one version of the story. Depending on the ancient cult, Eros is sometimes intertwined with cupid, who is a constant companion of Diana. Apollo insulted Eros, who took revenge by shooting Apollo with a golden arrow, rendering the God in a state of uncontrolable passion. Eros shot Daphne with a lead arrow, the love interest of Apollo, causing her to develope complete disdain for Apollo. The story does not end well, and according to myth, the creation of the laurel bush. The clock case is bronze, gilded using the obsolete furnace mercury evaporation process. The movement is a brass full plate 108mm japy freres style, spring powered. The chime is bell type, which stikes the hour and half-hour. Porcelain dial with Brequet style minute/hour hands. Contrary to popular thought an oversized clock like this one, was not destined for the fire place mantel. Those clocks generally utilized garnitures, which were mostly candelabrum. The library was the home for mammoth clocks, with a plinth built as an extention of a bookcase. Ceilings were excessively tall in a Chateau. One only needs to examine a 19th Century Aubusson window surround to comprehend their scale. Beyond the art, it's purpose was a statement of position. Just like silverwares, the greater the wealth the bigger the pieces. Today, this style of clock being less pretentious then those of the royals, can find a home in a multitude of modern settings.
