- A SCARCE JADE GREEN RUBA ROMBIC BOWL
A SCARCE JADE GREEN RUBA ROMBIC BOWL CIRCA 1928The rare and striking example of Consolidated Glass Company's Ruba Rombic line is found in the form of a deep bowl or vessel with polished top rim and the very appropriate color of jade green. In the 1920s and 1930s, there was a renewed and widespread fascination in the exoticism of the Far East. Polished Jade, onyx and other materials resembling jade, real or faux, were frequently incorporated in Art Deco decorative arts and jewelry of that period. The Ruba Rombic line was designed by Reuben Haley (1872-1933) in 1927 and introduced in 1928. It was only made for four years. The impetus for the design is thought to be derived from Cubist paintings Haley would have been exposed to during his time in Paris around 1925.Measures 425 x 8.25 x 8.25 inches.Very good condition, noting flakes around the rim where the glass was sheared at the factory.

Eric Sloane (American, 1905-1985)
Eric Sloane was an American landscape painter, illustrator, and author of illustrated books on the cultural history and folklore of America. He painted rustic landscapes in the tradition of the Hudson River School. In the 1950s, he began spending part of the year in Taos, New Mexico where he painted western landscapes and particularly luminous depictions of the desert sky. In his career as a painter, he produced over 15,000 works. His fascination with the sky and weather led to commissions to paint works for the US Air Force and the production of several illustrated works on meteorology and weather forecasting. Sloan also had a great interest in New England fold culture, Colonial daily life, and Americana. He wrote and illustrated scores of books on Colonial-era tools, architecture, farming techniques, folklore, and rural wisdom. Every book included detailed illustrations, hand lettered titles, and his characteristic folksy wit and observations.

ROBERT DOWD (AMERICAN, 1936-1996) "SAWBUCK" Acrylic on canvas. Signed 'Dowd' (lower right), titled 'Sawbuck', and dated ''65' (on reverse).
Robert Dowd (American, 1936-1996)
Robert Dowd was an American artist, who also painted under the name Robert O’Dowd. After his discharge from the US Marines in 1957, he entered the Society of Arts and Crafts/Center for Creative Studies, Detroit Michigan, where he studied painting. In 1958-59 he began drawing common objects, including ‘Stop’ signs. His work first appeared in an Art in America article on the “Young Artists Group” in Detroit. In 1960, he moved to San Francisco and began working on his first images of postage stamps. In 1961, he moved to Los Angeles and began work on his currency paintings. By 1962, he was getting attention for his groundbreaking paintings of common objects. Among the country, several other artists were experimenting with this new concept and in 1962 he was invited to show his work at the Pasadena Art Museum. The 1960s were a time of social unrest and the FBI and government thought anybody who was anti-establishment should be investigated and persecuted despite the right of freedom of expression. Unfortunately for Dowd, his fascination with painting currency caught the attention of the Secret Service. Painting currency in those days was considered counterfeiting, even if intended as a spoof. This certainly hurt his career, so he switched back to painting postage stamps but continued to paint currency in private.
