His black-and-white etchings and engravings explore themes of place, myth and memory. The artist states: "I really felt I had to give up color because . . . I could never be sure that what I was seeing was what anybody else was seeing. . . . [W]hen I went into printmaking, I made a one-for-one substitution of texture for color. And in the end, I didn't feel that I'd given up anything." Milton's work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Tate Gallery (London) and the Biblioteque Nationale (Paris), among others.
