Charles IX King of France DS 1567Charles IX King of France DS 1567 DS 3pp approx. 8.5 x 12.5 in. Paris? March 1567 on paper. In French. Two pages numbered 37 and 38. Countersigned. Born in 1550 Charles Maximilian found himself proclaimed king at the tender age of 10. His mother Catherine de' Medici became regent and dominated government even after she was no longer ''officially'' acting in that role. Religion was the big issue of Charles' day. In France it was Hugeuenots (Calvinist Protestants) opposed by Catholics. The event(s) that launched Charles into infamy was/were the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre or more properly Massacres since they actually continued for weeks spreading out of the cities and towns and into the countryside. By some accounts after this Charles bordered on insanity haunted he said by images of murdered Huguenots. Charles died in 1574 apparently of tuberculosis a month short of his 24th birthday. Condition: Some water damage along edges; minor fading of ink.
