Elizabeth Fry, 1780 – 1845, known as the “Genius of Mercy,” achieved an international reputation for her work in prison reform, and for her concern for the poor, sick and destitute. This figure was based on a statue of Mrs. Fry still standing today outside the central criminal court in Old Bailey, London.

Strongly reminiscent of the contemporary work of Charles Vyse, the piece was issued from 1930 to 1949. The underside fully marked in black script with title, Sweet Lavender HN 1373 plus Royal Doulton black printed backstamp as used from 1927 to 1932. Beautifully, hand decorated and hand painted in green stripped dress with pink patterened shawl.
