JOHANN BERTHELSEN "WINTER IN WASHINGTONJOHANN BERTHELSEN "WINTER IN WASHINGTON SQUARE NY"Johann Henrik Carl Berthelsen (Danish/American, 1883-1972). Oil on canvas painting titled "Winter in Washington Square, New York" depicting a peaceful snowy day in the city, 1952. Signed along the lower right. Dated along the verso along the stretcher.
His wintry paintings depicting New York City were among Berthelsen's most popular works, being collected by prominent figures including William Randolph Hearst, Richard E. Berlin, Frank Sinatra, Ethel Merman, and Dinah Shore. However, he did not begin as a painter. For much of his life, he was a professional singer and voice teacher who was essentially a self-taught artist. Though he worked in pastels for most of his life, he began painting in oils after losing many of his voice students during the Great Depression. He had a lifelong friendship with Wayman Adams, who had studied with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri.
The artwork perfectly captures the beauty and atmosphere of wintertime snowfall at Washington Square in New York City. While bluntly depicting figures in the street and the city landscape under blinding flurries, Berthelsen emphasizes the peaceful yet cold atmosphere of winter snowfall, which attests that he was heavily influenced by the European Impressionists. The blue and grey-toned monochrome palette in the painting supports his focus on delivering the atmosphere rather than the detail of the scene.

Artist's Biography: Anatol Shulkin, Russian-American, 1899-1961
Shulkin immigrated to the United States from Russian at twelve and studied with George Bellows and Leon Kroll at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design in the 1920's. He had early solo exhibitions at the Art Centre Gallery, later at the Midtown Galleries in New York, and was a founding member of An American Group, Inc., a leftist leaning organization of artists. In 1932, the New York Times reviewed a solo exhibition of Shulkin’s work, commenting “he deserves front rank honors…put this exhibition, without fail, on your list of current ‘musts’. “ Later, Shulkin was a successful muralist with awards from the U.S. Treasury in 1935, 1937, 1938 and 1940, producing murals for the Works Progress Administration as well as several important private commissions. He also exhibited at the Corcoran Biennial, The National Academy of Art, The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Carnegie Institute, and the Art Institute of Chicago. As a native Russian-speaker, Shulkin had access to the Soviet Delegation at the 1944 Dumbarton Oaks Conference, the result of which is a series of historic life portraits in this sale. Anatol Shuklin's work is in the permanent collections of the Whitney and Metropolitan Museum of Art.
