HOME STUDIO WORK STATION OF WILBUR NIEWALDA three piece work station, comprised of two pine easels and a painting stand, from the home studio of painter Wilbur Niewald. The easels measure 88" x 24" x 28" and 84" x 24" x 24", and the stand measures 35" x 16" x 12". The stand is filled with brushes and tools as found.
Wilbur Niewald, celebrated painter and beloved member of Kansas City arts community, passed away in 2022. As a painter, Niewald tirelessly created honest and engaging plein air landscapes, still life, and portraiture; he was the recipient of the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 2006, and the Charlotte Street Fund Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. As a professor and longtime chair of the Painting department at the Kansas City Art Institute, he helped guide generations of young artists.
Condition
The condition is as found, well used but solid.

A large canvas of desert shrubs and grasses, a scene from New Mexico. Housed in a slim wooden frame measuring 50 1/2" x 70".
Marleen Gold received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1979, influenced by her studies under Stanley Lewis, Wilbur Niewald, and Michael Walling. In 2022, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art celebrated her life and art with the retrospective "Deconstructing Marleen Gold," which related Gold's work to the likes of Lois Dodd, Wolf Kahn, and Fritz Scholder.

Wilbur Niewald has been dubbed "the Patriarch of the Kansas City Art World" by Juliân Zugazagoitia, director of the Nelson-Atkins Gallery of Art. In addition to a career of creating exciting and influential works of his own, Niewald joined the Kansas City Art Institute's faculty in 1949, where over the course of several decades in a variety of roles (including the Chair of Painting and Printmaking) he helped shape KCAI pedagogy and prepare generations of contemporary artists.
Condition
Very good condition. There is a negligible fold at the bottom right of the sheet, and some bending to the bottom left corner of the mat. The artist's pinholes are at each corner of the sheet.
