The Shotgun shows numerous Belgian proof marks on the underside of the barrel, as well as on the left and right lockplate. Each lockplate also reads "W. Richards". The underside of the barrel also reads "1903-10", and "MC - 10. 0". The fore-grip is also stamped "101475". Overall, the shotgun shows fair condition, there is multiple splits in the wooden buttstock, and heavy wear to the finish. Mechanics are currently inoperable. W. Richards Side x Side 16 GA Hammered Shotgun: This is a W. Richards Side By Side 16 gauge Hammer Shotgun. This is a fine condition example of a high grade European double barrel shotgun that was very popular in the latter part of the 19th century in both the United States and in Europe. This example is better than most encountered on the collector market today as it has a solid, un-cracked stock with sharp checkering patterns on the pistol grip as well as on the forend. The 32‰Û barrels are marked on top ‰ÛÏLAMINATED STEEL‰Û and retain bright and shiny bores. Most of these shotguns are found in 12 gauge with 16 and 20 gauge examples being scarce and commanding premium values on the collector market today. The twist steel pattern is still distinct on both barrels and both lock plates are clearly marked ‰ÛÏW. RICHARDS. ‰Û This shotgun has the popular and desirable side lever instead of the more common swinging lever mounted on the top of the upper tang behind the receiver. Pressing downward on the lever releases the barrels for loading and for the removal of fired shells. The action is extremely tight on this example which in itself is unusual as most from this era have been ‰ÛÏshot loose‰Û over time. Both rebounding hammers retain strong springs and function correctly. Both barrels show good twist steel patterns, no dents and have not been cleaned. They display a most attractive original brown patina. The lock plates and receiver are similarly un-restored and retain traces of original case color. The butt plate, too, is original and unaltered. Overall, a fine example in a scarce gauge that would be too costly to mass produce today. The firearm qualifies as an Antique Shotgun, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: NSN. Condition For a complete representation of condition and for additional images please call 800-686-4216. It is the buyer‰Ûªs responsibility to view each image and preview the item to determine condition.

Army & Navy 12-bore SxS sidelock non-ejector shotgun Barrel length: 28"; Chambers: 2 1/2"; Chokes: R 8 L 34; Material: steel; Rib: game; Locks: back action sidelock; Operating lever: top-lever; Stock length: 14 1/2"; Grip type: straight; Weight: 6lb 10oz. SN 18543.
This Webley-built back-action sidelock has border engraving, a brushed bright finish and replacement barrels by the makers. Choked approximately Improved Cylinder and Full; this is a typical Army & Navy model, well-made but without embellishment. The action is the very successful Rodgers' patent sidelock, which became the trade standard for second quality guns in the first quarter of the 20th century.
The straight-grained straight-hand stock and splinter forend provide a classic English sidelock game gun profile.
Other Notes: Army & Navy was a co-operative society established in Victoria Street in 1871 by a group of British armed services officers. Trade was by way of catalogue as well as personal visit to the store. The mail-order business was very successful and the first of its type in the world.
Membership was limited to officers and non-commissioned officers and the stores opened a gun department in 1873 at 105 Victoria Street. This moved to 8 Howick place in 1888, then to 117 Victoria Street. In 1890 a branch was opened in Bombay by Thomas Lawrence (ex Purdey), followed by a branch in Calcutta (managed from 1901 by Archie Leeson, son of W. R. Leeson of Ashford, Kent, and London, and brother of Reg Leeson of R. B. Rodda of Calcutta). By 1901 other branches in Delhi and Karachi had been opened and agents had been appointed in South Africa (in Cape Town and Durban).
The Society never made guns; their guns and rifles were bought mainly from Birmingham, bearing either the Army & Navy name or the name of the actual maker; Philip Webley, W & C Scott (later Webley & Scott), Westley Richards and W. W. Greener all supplied the company with shotguns and double rifles. Army & Navy guns were supplied in all qualities, including 'best' but they are widely known for providing good quality sporting guns for overseas use. For this reason a lot of plainly finished guns with excellent workmanship are found bearing the firm's name. However, one encounters very fine guns more often than the public perception realizes.
The company had a shooting ground at Greenford, just outside London. In 1934 the Society changed its name to Army & Navy Stores Ltd, and it opened its doors to the general public.
Founded to serve an empire, the Army & Navy CSL saw the end of its natural life with the British withdrawal from India in 1947 and subsequently from the African colonies. It did not sell shotguns after WW2 and, although it struggled on as a department store until 1973, the best days were well behind it and it was absorbed into the House of Frazer.

There are Birmingham and crown over both “BP” proof marks on the bottom of the bbl with makers initials “WR” on the bottom of the bbls and “J. W.” on the bottom rib. The locks are lightly engraved, but the balance of the furniture is plain. The wood ramrod has a brass tip on each end. Accompanying the gun are advertisements by Remington describing their imported shotguns and other items. Consignor believes this was a sample gun, made perhaps by Westley Richards, in England to entice Remington to import and sell English shotguns (see ad) before the Civil War, since Remington was not selling guns at the time. Consignor and those in the Remington Society Research Team have never seen another so marked. This gun was pictured in The Guns of Remington by Howard Madaus, p. 7. Other Notes: William Richard Leeson was born in 1851 in St John's Wood, London. His father was of Irish extraction (the Leeson family of Dublin, Leeson Park etc.). In about 1872 he was transferred to London, while working as an engineer. After marrying, in 1878 William moved to Ashford in Kent where he opened his own gunmaking business at 28 George Street and in 1879 moved to 38 Bank Street, establishing a shooting ground within a few minutes' walk from the shop. He cemented his success in 1890, when the firm was appointed Rifle Maker to the Duke of Edinburgh (he supplied a rook rifle). William Leeson's elder son, Reginald Garrard Leeson, was apprenticed with P. Webley & Son and following his apprenticeship in 1895, joined his father only to leave within the year to go to R. B. Rodda & Co in Calcutta. His younger son, Archie St. John Leeson, was also apprenticed with Webley and in 1899 joined his father who opened a shop at 29 Maddox Street, Regent Street, London (south of Hanover Square). However, Archie left his father after only 18 months to join the gun department of the Army & Navy Co-operative Society in Bombay. In 1904 it is reported that the firm took additional premises in London at 31 George Street, Hanover Square. These may have been for workshop or storage purposes, but this has not been confirmed. The firm continued trading from various premises until 1933, when William Leeson died. During his time in business, Leeson produced some very high-quality guns in all bores and a distinctive style of conical fence (Leeson Fences) typify much of his output.
