Salesman's Book of Fruit and Flower Color Plates Some refer to these as Nurserymen's books but this one folds into thirds and slips into a 7.25 x 10 in. leather case - clearly for travel. The 5.25 x 8.5 in. plates are glued back to back with a ribbon between them in groups of 3. The leather front has gilt Fruit & Ornamental Foliage. The marbled paper cardboard dividers are joined by fabric. The book contains 126 wonderful color plates of fruit flowers and trees most printed by J.W. Thompson & Co. (80+ plates). A few are by C.M. Search & Co. (17 and at least 2 more); a couple by Mensing & Stecher (2); some are unknown (23) because the printer information was trimmed off or in one case the page has torn across the bottom but probably represent one of these three companies all based in Rochester NY the center of fruit/flower color plate printing. Based on the working times of these companies the book probably dates between 1876 (when Thompson started) and 1886 (when Mensing died and the company became Stecher Litho. Co.).As demand changed or species were replaced often the salesman would paste a new image over the old one. This salesman did just that (and fortunately only glued across the top of the plate leaving the underlying plate nearly intact). Many of the plates have prices penciled at top (many were 25 or 50 cents or 3 for $1). Species that were apparently no longer available - many with others pasted on top - have "W" on them (for withdrawn?). The illustrated species [including the ones covered by newer selections]:Apples - Duchess of Oldenburgh Haas [covers Alexander (Emperor)] Dominie or Wells of Ohio [covers Huzzar] Red Bietigheiner [covers Nickajack and Emperor Russian] Salome [covers Stark and Czar of Russia] Walbridge [covers Late Russian] Red Astrachan Yellow Transparent [covers Rawle's Janet] Fameuse or Snow [covers Ben Davis] Grimes Golden [covers Laver] Baldwin [covers Mann] Walker's Beauty [covers Wealthy] Sylvan Sweet Whitney's Seedling Siberian Crab Dartmouth Crab Hyslop Crab [covers Van Wyck Sweet Crab] Martha Crab [covers Large Red Siberian] TetofskyPeaches - Hopkinsville Seedling Arkansas Traveler Missouri Mammoth Sallie Worrell Steadley [covers Governor Garland] Salway [covers Mammoth White Clingstone]Cherries - Large Montmorency Empress Eugenie Moore's Early May Early Richmond [covers Lieb] Toronto Louis PhilippePears - Bartlett Kieffer's Hybrid Flemish Beauty Clapp's Favorite [covers Frederick Clapp] Duchess D'Angouleme [covers Souvenir du Congress] Claywood's BeautyPlums - Weaver Mooney Louisa Blackman [covers German Prune] Lombard [covers Orange Quince]Quince - ChampionStrawberries - Sharpless Seedling Crescent Seedling James Vick New Strawberry-Big BobGooseberry - Smith's Improved Downing's SeedlingOther Berries - Gregg Raspberry Hansell (red raspberry) Snyder Blackberry The Marlboro (red raspberry) Fay's Prolific Currant White Grape CurrantGrapes - Niagara [covers Brighton] Lady Washington Moore's Early Pocklington Moore's Diamond [covers Vergennes] Empire State [covers Prontiss][Berry with name removed covering Rhubarb labeled as "Wine or Pie Plant"]Russian Apricot Elruge NectarineEverbearing Mulberry Russian Mulberry Lucretia DowberryFlowers:Clematis Jackmanii Perpetual Clematis-Henryii Perpetual Clematis-Gem Magnolia Acuminata Tartarian or Upright Honeysuckle Passion Flower [covers Rhododendron] Spirea Aurea Spirea Reevesii Althea-Variegated Leaved Hydranea Paniouls Grandiflora Variegated-leaved Weigela Calycanthus or Sweet Scented ShrubRoses - Greville or Seven Sisters Queen of the Prairies General Jacquemynot La France American Beauty [covers Perpetual White Moss] The "Bride" [covers Crested Moss]Trees etc.Kilmarnock Weeping Willow Weeping Mountain Ash Cut Leaved Weeping Birch American Sweet Chestnut Tulip Tree (2) [first covers Oak-Leaved Mountain Ash second covers White Leaved Weeping Linden Balsam Fir Norway Spruce White Pine Irish English or Swedish Juniper Hemlock Spruce Red CedarIn the mid-19th century a "horticulture craze" took hold in America particularly in the Upper Midwest. Although a boon for nurserymen and seed distributors it also became a target for conmen with complaints ranging from non-delivery of ordered products to inferior or misrepresented plants to inappropriate stock for a particular region. To attempt to gain some respectability back many nursery owners recruited and trained salesmen to represent their stock throughout the nation. This coincided with another craze - color plate illustration. D.M. Dewey in Rochester NY is credited with being the first to bring the two together and begin producing color plates of fruits flowers and other nursery stock that salesmen and store owners could show to potential customers. Dewey even printed a "training manual" for salesmen (1875) guiding them in what to show customers and how to entice them to purchase more than they originally intended (see Kabelac). For unclear reasons Rochester became the "hub" of printing these wonderful color plates as more printers and booksellers took up the business and the area boasted over half a dozen companies printing primarily if not exclusively these fruit and flower plates by the 1880s and 1890s.The techniques of printing these varied from the standard hand-coloring of lithographic plates to a combination stencil and hand-detailing. Eventually multicolor lithography (chromolithography) was introduced. A number of examples of this art form were included in the Amon Carter Museum exhibit "Stamped with a National Character" (and William Reese's accompanying book by the same title). Some printers offered large and small plates the former for store counter displays the latter for salesmen and even personal use. Other firms only offered one size. J.W. Thompson appears to have been one of the latter offering the small plates for sales books (Kabelac). The plates weren't cheap. Prices could run 35 cents or more each for large plates; ten to 15 cents each for small plates was not uncommon. Kabelac (1982) found ads for "cheap" books of 40 plates for $3.50; "regular" books of 70 plates sold for twice that - well over $100 today (according to some calculations) the price of a fancy "coffee table book."With the resurgence of interest in horticulture today these plates have historical appeal - we see the tenacity of favorite varieties as well as those which have fallen out of favor or even gone extinct. And the brilliance of the color and simplicity of design of these plates insures their esthetic appeal today and into the future.References:D. M. The plates are variable some with minor surface soil or foxing one with a section of the lower edge missing. Overall however they are bright and attractive.

A comprehensive Victorian private die suite R Gray & Son of Glasgow, various dates, of private die pattern, double struck, comprising: thirty five table forks; twenty three table spoons; soup ladle; fish slice; two large pairs serving spoons and two smaller; sauce ladle; fifteen dessert spoons; two sugar tongs; five condiment spoons; twelve teaspoons; thirteen dessert forks Combined weight: 272oz Estimate £ 3,000-5,000 Note: The Work of Robert Gray (and Robert Gray & Sons) is without doubt some of the finest produced in Scotland in the 19th century. The constant quality seen throughout their work from small items of flatware to much larger and impressive tea and coffee services, salvers and wine coolers is perhaps unique in Scotland. While there were no truly specialised flatware makers in Scotland, as is seen in England, Gray is as close as is found. They produced not only the standard patterns in Scotland at the time but particularly fine variations of these. These included standard die struck patterns, the use of double struck patterns (rare in Scotland) to completely unique patterns to their workshop. They perhaps showed their ability and skill most expertly in the production of private die patterns featuring the crest or armorial of the client. Canteens featuring these designs are rare and the cost to the client to have a number of specially produced dies for their own use meant these were the preserve of only the highest reaches of Scottish society. These private die patterns are rare in Scotland and when encountered are predominantly by Gray, showing Gray's place as the premier flatware makers in the country. The pattern seen on this canteen is not commonly encountered and is considered an invention of the Gray workshop. Commonly called Scottish Kings shape (rococo end) it takes the common and popular outline of Kings Pattern but adds a unique pattern and decoration, occasionally seen with the addition of private die crest / armorials, but in the main seen such as this with simple cartouche for engraved initials / crest. Single items of this pattern are scarce but a canteen of this size is rarely encountered. . Sold for £4,500 (buyer's premium included)

A Philip and Kelvin LaVerne bronze coffee table, Circa 1969 With incised signature and numbered illegibly [possibly 70 or 16 and III] The "Persephone Enslaved" table with the base in the form of a recumbent female nude figure with free-flowing rope supporting an organically shaped glass top 17.75" H x 38" W x 26" D Notes: Philip (1907-1987) and Kelvin LaVerne (b. 1937) are a father-son team who started creating their furniture designs in 1960 out of a studio in New York City. Philip studied art at the Arts Student League in New York, while his son Kelvi, who attended City College in New York City and Parsons, majored in metal sculpting and furniture design. Drawing upon their unique talents, the collaborative design duo continually experimented with various techniques that they selectively employed in their designs. While Philip focused on the artistic elements and subject matter, his son Kelvin worked on translating his father's vision into functional furniture designs. As a result, they became known for incorporating multiple mediums -- such as pewter, patinated bronze, and silver" into a single unified furniture design. Their sources of inspiration varied greatly, and the pair often drew upon Classical motifs and those from Chinese, Egyptian, and Greek cultures. Cast bronze tables with a figural sculptural base, such as "Persephone Enslaved," are rare within LaVerne's body of work. As manufacturing such tables was time-consuming, expensive, and laborious, coffee tables such as Persephone Enslaved were produced in small editions for only a few years during the 1970s. Dimensions: 17.75" H x 38" W x 26" D

Thomas Molesworth Sweet Water Ranch Coffee Table: The lot features an original hand created coffee table with exquisite burl wood accented legs and a wonderful western wood lined side. The piece is stamped on the bottom by Sweet Water Ranch. Lloyd Taggart's parents were one of Thomas Molesworth's first clients in the 1930's and later he became one of Molesworth's closest friend, exchanging around 100 letters during their life time. In 1991, 14 years after the death of Thomas Molesworth, Lloyd Taggart established the Sweet Water Ranch in Cody, Wyoming. The company was dedicated to restoring original Molesworth furniture and building additional pieces. Later that business was renamed for the now owner, Lloyd Taggart's son Marc Taggart & Co. This piece is from that company. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. Bruce always would tell his family, friends, and patrons of the gallery that he believed this table to be an original Molesworth that had been refurbished, but this cannot be confirmed as both Bruce and Lloyd Taggart are now passed on. The piece shows a typical Thomas Molesworth style with prominent Western motif, burl legs and red leather top. The piece is covered with a glass top and shows overall good condition with some signs of use. Measures overall 61. 5"L x 31. 5"W x 19"H. Marc Taggart and Sweet Water Ranch furniture is very collectible with some pieces being brought to auction such as the chandelier sold by Brian Lebel's Old West in 2007 for $5, 500, the chairs sold by John Moran Auctioneers for $4, 750 in 2016 and the sofa console table sold by John Moran Auctioneers in 2016 for $3, 000, none of which show nearly the same Molesworth representation and quality as the coffee table offered in this lot. 2V Laurie Norton Moffatt NORMAN ROCKWELL: A DEFINITIVE CATALOGUE 1986 Collectible American Art History Illustrator Cloth Slipcase Title: Norman Rockwell: A Definitive Catalogue - Laurie Norton MoffattAuthor: Laurie Norton MoffattPublisher: The Norman Rockwell Museum at StockbridgeCity: Stockbridge, MassachusettsYear: 1986Binding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 2 Full Set: YesWidth: 9.5" Height: 12.5"Book Details: Arthur C. Danto's review in the "New York Times" characterized this book in the following manner: "(Norman Rockwell: A Definitive Catalogue) speaks eloquently, simply as an object, of its sponsors' belief in its subject's art-historical importance. The scholarship is stupendous and thorough. Nearly 4,000 entries - all but a few illustrated and all identified as to medium, size, date of origin and whereabouts of original (surprisingly often ''unknown'') -clearly express the intention that the book be used for reference; and its two volumes are bound and cased as if heavy archival use was anticipated. It lacks the ingratiating text of the coffee table book, and its color illustrations, while serviceable, are inferior to those in Thomas Buechner's two books on Rockwell. Who but a Rockwell scholar would be interested in schematic drawings of pup tents for 'The Boy Scout Hike Book' or an illustration of the right- and wrong-sized shoe, done with podiatric accuracy?"Condition / Notes: Bound in blue cloth with black spine labels and stamped gilt lettering, this slipcased set is a scarce collection of the work of Norman Rockwell. The exteriors are very well-preserved, with some rubbing and fading to the spine labels. The bindings are sound. The text block is adorned with blue endpapers. The title pages are in black and red, and the pages are clean and bright. The work is illustrated with frontispiece portraits, and several full-page illustrations are in color. The blue cloth-covered slipcase is well-preserved and features a separate compartment for each volume. For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States. For lots which are not books, the stated shipping cost in this listing will apply only to addresses within the continental 48 states. Within those parameters, the shipping cost for this lot will be: $16.50

THE MCCLEERY BOYD MERGANSER DRAKEGeorge Boyd (1873-1941)
Seabrook, NH, c. 1910
18 ¾ in. long
“I had the good fortune of visiting with Jim McCleery on several occasions in his home in Texas. He was one of the most noble gentlemen I have ever met and he was a consummate host! I remember our visits as lively affairs that included conversations with his pet parrot, checking out his tortoise in the backyard, and preparing Mexican dinner feasts in the kitchen. Conversations after dinner eventually came back to shorebirds and waterfowl and I was amazed at Jim’s knowledge of all things bird related and how he viewed decoy collecting.
"He was a great teacher, and at all times a student. Nuances of decoys and their makers came second nature to Jim and he would often pick up two birds and reveal how the two related. His take was different from any other collector I have ever met. I believe Jim viewed decoy collecting as a giant puzzle, and he was a master at connecting its pieces.
"Jim reserved special spots on his shelves, fireplace, and walls for his favorite birds. I remember the first time I saw the George Boyd Mergansers on display in his home. The turned-head hen swimmer graced Jim’s coffee table alongside the famous dovetailed goose and Crowell’s preening goose. Her presence was bold and animated; I was so enamored looking at those three birds, it was a half hour before I realized that Jim owned a matching drake!”
— Stephen O’Brien Jr.
The McCleery red-breasted merganser pair represents two of the most refined carvings to come out of New England. They literally sit head and shoulders above all other Boyd merganser examples with their uplifted heads, broad shoulders, and wide and sophisticated paddle tails.
The delicately carved head is turned to the left approximately thirty degrees with a forward-reaching and uplifted posture. The surface features both concise paint patterns and the artist’s finest stippled paint along the sides. True to the sex, Boyd used red glass eyes for this drake, contrasting the amber eyes of the hen. The pencil-thin upturned bill features nail carving and a mortise-and-tenon fit hardwood bill, identical in construction to the maker’s shorebirds.
The bottom retains the “McCLEERY” ink stamp.
Outstanding original paint with light, even gunning wear and a tight age line along the bottom.

STEVENSON, ROBERT LOUIS. 1850-1894.
"I HAVE HAD MY FUTURE TOLD: I AM TO BE VERY HAPPY AND GET TO BE MUCH ON THE SEA..."
Autograph Letter Signed ("R.L. Stevenson"), 4 pp recto and verso, 8vo (conjoined leaves), Argyll Hotel / Dunoon, April 29, 1870, to his mother, outer pages toned, short fold split.
Long, revealing letter from the 19-year old Stevenson to his mother, in which he relates having had his fortune told. Stevenson also offers good-natured criticism of both parents as correspondents and of the art in the hotel he is visiting. In part: "For the first time, I receive a little news but even that of a somewhat slender extent. My father's correspondence is characterized by a laconic brevity: he hits the nail on the head perhaps, but he never attempts more than one nail in the same letter. Ink I opine, is growing scarce in 84. Your own epistle is of the lugubrious order, consisting mainly of a long Jeremiad of grievances. Who is Tin, whose absence you regret so much? / I am pretty jolly ... I wear my Jersey under my pilot-coat, a conjunction of raiment which gives me somewhat of a Methodist fisherman or a revivalistic canoist. / The people here thought Adam Sedgewick and me, divinity students: partly from my face, and partly from our high-flown language, and our strictures on a huge drawing in the coffee room. This work of art contains the whole of the bible in illegible characters and a good many blasphemous portraits into the bargain. It was the work of one industrious human being & a fellow creature, Mrs S, but weak! / For further adornment we have the picture of a paralytic pointer, which (the picture—not the dog) is suffering from an aggravated small-pox ... Shakespeare illustrated by Kenny Meadows lies on the table. If I looked at these profuse tableaus my opinion of Shakespeare would keep to the level of Harriet's. Tell the latter that I saw a German. I have had my future told: I am to be very happy and get to be much on the sea: two predictions which my queasy stomach will hardly consider as agreeable with each other...."
