- CHINESE REPUBLIC PERIOD WANG SHAOWEI
CHINESE REPUBLIC PERIOD WANG SHAOWEI VASE. Chinese Republic Period enamel decorated vase with by artist Wang Shaowei (also named Tingzui, active 1862-1908). Vase of ovoid form with splayed rim and elephant form handles. Displaying depictions of a monkey perched on a branch with outstretched arm holding a stick. This scene is set above a man on horseback watching the monkey above. Alternate side is decorated with a landscape scene of a home in the clearing of hills. With a signature and calligraphy panel above. Wang Shaowei was employed for a period of time in the imperial factory, and specialized in painting using qianjing enamel. Take note that he was known specifically for his paintings of monkeys. From a Port Monmouth, NJ estate. Dimensions: vase measures approx. 17.375" h. Condition: One edge chip that continues to 4.5" to 5.5" hairline (interior and exterior dimensions). Several additional edge chips and/or abrasions that result in losses to the gilt decoration. Minor enamel losses. Light surface scratches and dings/dents.

Total approx. weight of rabbit is 17.7 grams (gross); total approx. weight of the tiger is 26.7 gra,s (gross); total approx. weight of the monkey is 17.2 grams (gross). From a Queens, NY estate. Dimensions: plaques measure on average approx. 2.35" w x 1.55" h. Condition: Good, with light surface scratches and minor dings/dents. Pierced at each corner of every plaque.

CELADON JADE MONKEY AND PEACH GROUPA celadon jade carving of two monkeys, mother and child, huddled together with a peach. Unmarked. Chinese, circa early 20th century. The motif of the monkey with peach recalls the story of Sun Wukong the Monkey King, who is named Protector of the Peaches of Immortality in the 16th century novel Journey to the West .
