A TWENTY-FIVE PIECE MEISSEN PORCELAIN GILT AND GREEN LINE ENAMELED TEA SET, MARKED, PFEIFFER PERIOD, 1924-1934, : A TWENTY-FIVE PIECE MEISSEN PORCELAIN GILT AND GREEN LINE ENAMELED TEA SET, MARKED, PFEIFFER PERIOD, 1924-1934, with each having a green line rim and borderline centering a gilt blossoming sprig on a finely potted translucent white porcelain body, verso underglaze blue crossed swords mark with tips flanking a single dot, various impressed and incised letters/numbers, comprising a partial service for six, with a teapot and lid, height: 6"; a circular trivet stand, Â a small cream pitcher and lid, a sugar bowl and lid, six teacups with six saucers, and six teacake plates, diameter: 7 1/4". Â Â Note: Max Adolf Pfeiffer (German 1875 - 1957) was a highly educated and trained mechanical engineer in the early 20th-century German ceramics industry. In 1913 he was appointed as the Commercial Director of Meissen manufactory and by the end of World War I, he was made the General Director (1918-1934). It was during his period that he was able to have built a Meissen factory museum, a memorial for the fallen of WWI in the Nikolaikirche, and the first working porcelain carillon in the Frauenkirche, provided by the Meissen factory in 1929. In addition to these accomplishments, he was able to bring more modern designs into the Meissen porcelain production by utilizing models by his contemporaries, such as Gerhard Marcks (of Bauhaus ceramics fame), Emil Borner, Max Esser, and others. This elegant Meissen tea set is a successful example of modernist principles with its' clean lines, lack of excessive decoration, and form following function directive. One may also add how well the potter has formed each piece and particularly the teacups with their sides having a nicely balanced weight that thins evenly as it comes up to the rim. Useful, clean, elegant, and well made by a world leader in porcelain, the Meissen modernist style porcelain wares from the Pfeiffer period (1924 - 1934) are a bit of history that the young consumer will find affordable and reflects the pared-down more modern interiors lived in today.
