Gustav Muss-Arnolt (1858-1927)Two Setters, 1901 signed and dated "G. Muss-Arnolt. p. 1901" lower right oil on canvas, 24 by 36 in.This painting depicting two setters in the field was commissioned in 1901 by Samuel Henry Vandergrift. Samuel, born in 1866 in Oil City, Pennsylvania, was the son of Captain Jacob J. Vandergrift, an American industrialist who rose from cabin boy to oil industry tycoon. Historian John T. Flynn writes, "After the war he moved to Oil City, drilled for oil, and built a refinery. He was a pipe line pioneer, building a four-mile carrier_which by additions and extensions was one day to expand into that far-flung tangle of pipes owned by the Standard. Captain Vandergrift was the Vice President of the National Refiners' Association to John D. Rockefeller's President, and his cooperation was key to forming Standard Oil. Among other pursuits, J.J. was also a principle investor in the Apollo Iron and Steel Company. A planned community for his workers, Vandergrift, PA, bears his name. Samuel entered the family oil and banking businesses, including Apollo, the Pittsburgh Trust Company and Keystone Bank, among others. He managed the family estate and pursued his gentlemanly hobbies of yachting, shooting, fishing, and power boat racing. He was a member of the American Ornithologists' Union, and in 1903 he won the Herron Hill Gun Club Championship. Vandergrift entered his setter, David Copperfield, in the all-ages stakes of the Monongahela Club's field trial in 1898, with the dog, "ranging and hunting in a stylish and merry way, which produced favorable impressions as to his work_After over an hour's trial they were ordered up. He was on the board as a founding member of the Duquesne Kennel Club and was also an active member of the New York Yacht Club, the Thousand Islands Yacht Club, and the Nittany Rod & Gun Club. In the same year the painting was created, Vandergrift bought land on Grindstone Island, part of the Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence River. His palatial summer home was located at Long Rock. He was active in the development of the Thousand Islands, serving as a donor and a director of the Thousand Island Park Golf Course. Vandergrift died in 1930. Vancroft Kennel was a highly decorated, prize-winning operation run by Vandergrift's brother Joseph. In 1902, the New York Times reported, "Vandergrift, also of Pittsburg, owner of the Van Croft Kennels, swept everything before him in the English setter classes, the leader being Champion Barton Tory, pronounced by Eastern judges at the New York show to be the finest type of English setter in the world. The kennel imported setters from abroad in the early 1900s, including "Queen's Place Pride and "Queen's Pride.Gustav Muss-Arnolt specialized in the depiction of hunters and their dogs. He worked as a judge in dog shows, served on the board of the American Kennel Club from 1906-1909, and demonstrated an incredible knowledge of a variety of sporting breeds in his paintings. Throughout his career, Muss-Arnolt's illustrations were published in many magazines such as "Harper's Weekly" and the "American Kennel Club Gazette.Provenenace: Samuel Henry Vandergift By descent to the present owner Literature: "Monongahela Club's Trials, Forest and Stream, December 3, 1898, Volume 51, p. 455. ? ALEXANDER NASMYTH (SCOTTISH 1758-1840) THE CHILDREN OF WILLIAM RAMSAY OF BARNTON Inscribed, and with the children's names and dated 1782, oil on canvas 91cm x 122cm (36in x 48in) Estimate £ 40,000-60,000 Note: Inscribed with the legend verso:- Warriston House Agnes wife of Col. Matt Baillie of Cairnbroe Mary wife of Capt. Chas. Hope Watson RN Peter Ramsay Alison wife of Sir John Marjoribanks Bt. of Lees George Ramsay William Ramsay Provenance: Sir Arthur Steel Maitland Bt. and thence by descent. Sold on the instructions of the Trustees. Alexander Nasmyth is well known as one of Scotland's finest landscape artists. He is perhaps less renowned though as a portrait painter and the arrival at auction of a major example of his work in this genre is a cause for some excitement. The Children of William Ramsay of Barnton is a vitally important example of the 18th century cult of child portraiture and one of the key works in Nasmyth's oeuvre. Redolent with detail and symbolism, it has not been seen on the market since it was commissioned in 1782 by the Edinburgh banker William Ramsay, (whose portrait by Raeburn was sold by Lyon & Turnbull in May 2008). Pictured against the backdrop of Warriston House, each of William Ramsay's six children is identified by the initials painted beneath their likenesses: From left to right these are: MB, WW, PR, AN (Alison), GR (George) and WR (William). An inscription on the reverse of the painting further identifies the sitters as, from left to right: Agnes, wife of Col Matthew Baillie of Cairnbrae Mary, wife of Captain Charles Hope Watson RN Peter Ramsay Alison, wife of Sir John Marjoribanks Bt of Lees George Ramsay William Ramsay George Ramsay, the eldest boy, shown in the picture wearing a red coat and a straw hat, holds a fishing rod while he brings his younger sister his catch, laying it in her apron. Close by, his brother holds George's fishing bag, completing the central focus of the painting which connects the gaze of the two brothers in a line through the eyes of their sister, thus creating a psychological relationship between the siblings. An unwitting fourth participant in this dynamic is the family dog, who gazes up adoringly at his young master, while held by the youngest brother. Interestingly the inclusion on the left of the remarkably tame swans appears to have been a conceit of Nasmyth's and he uses it again in the group portrait of Mr and Mrs Archibald Swinton and Their Children, which dates from 1787. This painting and the Barnton portrait share other, similar qualities, including the reversed pose of the child leaning on the dog (in the Swinton painting a horse) and the inclusion of a rose bush. Notably absent in the Barnton painting of course, are the parents. It is further possible, comparing this work with the Swinton painting, to detect the beginnings of the change in Nasmyth's work which takes hold after 1787, chiefly in the treatment of the landscape, which in the later painting hints at the influence of the artist's trip to Italy, where he studied from December 1782 to 1785. The Barnton painting is thus also important in being one of the last works in this genre painted by Nasmyth, before the stylistic changes brought about by his Italian sojourn, by which his sitters become more integrated into their surroundings. Nasmyth had begun his career as a portraitist with a palette of blues, pinks, lilacs and purples and an attention to fabric and texture, which emulated that of his early master Allan Ramsay, with whom he worked in London from 1774 to 1778. His earliest portraits were principally of single sitters, but from 1780 Nasmyth began to paint groups in the manner of Zoffany, notably The Duke of Atholl and his Family of that year and Patrick Miller and His Children, dated to 1782, the same year as the Barnton painting. Nasmyth prefers to place his groups in a pastoral setting, often with their residence in the background, as seen here and also in his portraits of the The 3rd Earl Rosebery and his Family in the Grounds of Barnbogle Castle (1784, Dalmeny House) and Lady Honyman and her Family (c.1790, National Galleries of Scotland). Revealingly, Nasmyth is at pains to create a sense of realism in these works, placing them in the context of an actual event, generally the return from a shoot, a pony ride or, as so charmingly depicted here, from a successful fishing expedition. . Sold for £96,100 (buyer's premium included)

Oliver Kemp (1887 Fishing, c. 1910
oil on canvas, 32 by 24 in.
Maj. Oliver Kemp was an accomplished artist and illustrator who created many covers for popular periodicals including The Century, Colliers, Scribner's, Harper's, and The Saturday Evening Post. He traveled regularly to experience the adventures he illustrated, and served as a major in World War I. He studied art in Europe under James McNeill Whistler and Jean Leon Gerome, and in the U.S. under William Merritt Chase, John Singer Sargent, and Howard Pyle. Kemp worked in New York but made his home in Michigan, where he died in 1934 at the age of 48.
This dynamic fly fishing work was used by the Horton Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Connecticut, the makers of Bristol Steel Fishing Rods, to promote their popular products in a 1910 advertisement. The painting was also illustrated in a 1981 article on the artist that appeared in Gray's Sporting Journal. It is one of Kemp's finest known fishing scenes.

Brian Clinton (B. 1942) "Fishing for Pleasure": Brian Clinton (Australian, B. 1942) "Fishing for Pleasure" Original Watercolor painting on Hot Press Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Australian 35c Fishing For Pleasure stamp issued October 24, 1979. . . Prehistoric men fished for food, and stone age men caught fish with water traps. Hundreds of years before Christ, the Chinese spun silk fish line and the Egyptians used flax to weave strong nets for the same purpose. Fishing is as old as man himself and for centuries has influenced man's way of life. Few other outdoor activities offer the same combination of grueling anticipation, bursts of sudden excitement, and periods of restful relaxation, that fishing does. In fact, the pleasures of fishing are as varied as the people who participate in the sport. Every fisherman has his own reason for fishing. Sport fishermen, for example are attracted to the excitement of hooking a real sea lunker. They use complicated equipment and topographic maps to determine where the fish are and when they will bite. Other fishermen simply enjoy the chance to escape the pressures of the workday world and bask in the quiet of a lonely cove while their simple fishing line dangles in the water. For others it is the beauty of the coastline on a lovely summer day that brings them fishing. Whatever their reason for fishing, all fishermen share an equal chance with lady luck. No one fisherman, in the centuries since man first fished, ever managed to convince her to promise special favors. The small barefoot boy fishing with a cane pole from a pier and the avid sport fisherman with expensive boat and steel rod have an equal chance. Neither knows what he will catch -- if anything. . .
