AN ITALIAN HAND PAINTED WOOD OCTAVE SPINET, 17TH/18TH C...AN ITALIAN HAND PAINTED WOOD OCTAVE SPINET, 17TH/18TH CENTURY, the hinged top centering a rounded rectangular reserve depicting a classical warrior with sword drawn on horseback fighting another on foot with shield set amidst a landscape in grisaille, flanked by floral bouquets and with additional hinged keyboard cover painted in polychrome colors with flowering leafy garlands, opening to a hinged music stand adjoining the interior of lid centering an armorial shield flanked by a lyre opposite a harp and all enclosed by a vitruvian scroll detailed border, over a removable wood and metal stringed instrument with a finely carved Flamboyant Gothic "rose" reticulated circular aperture, before a keyboard with wood and ebonized keys within sides centering floral painted decoration, height: 7", width: 59", depth: 19 1/2"; together with a later custom walnut trestle form stand, total height: 31", width: 59", depth: 19 1/2". Provenance: Property from the Jesse H. Jones and Houston Endowment Collection, all proceeds to benefit the Houston Food Bank.
Condition:
Painted case has old varnish which has darkened, in-painting, chips, dings, scratches, over-painted areas, age shrinkage cracks, wear, old repairs, and surface build up throughout. A CONTINENTAL ANTIQUE PAINTED WOOD SINGLE MANUAL VARIOU...A CONTINENTAL ANTIQUE PAINTED WOOD SINGLE MANUAL VARIOUS WOODS AND BONE HARPSICHORD SPINET, 17TH/18TH CENTURY, the case possibly Austro-Italian 18th/19th century and of traditional single manual form with a plum ground body decorated throughout in green scrolling acanthus rinceaux, with hinged keyboard lid interior side centering a hand painted armorial of a double headed spread winged eagle atop a knight's helmet over a white ground shield quartered by a blue cross with corner radiating lozenges, flanked by fluttering birds and suspending blossoming festoons, adjoining hinged harp case lid decorated with a border of bright red leafy floral clusters joined by curling ribbons and centering a parrot perched on a truncated tree trunk while devouring flowering stems, covering a wire stringed harp centering a circular aperture with reticulated stylized flower cover, within a rosewood frame mounted with spaced bone beads before a keyboard with ebony and bone keys, raised on tapering circular ringed legs. Condition:
The case and legs have flaking paint, faded areas, losses, chips, scratches, cracks, old repairs, touch ups, stains, warped, inactive worming, surface wear, buildup in areas, and part of keyboard cover is lacking.
