Two Bills of Sales for Slaves andTwo Bills of Sales for Slaves and Later Notes and Photographs A view of slavery and the relationships between these social groups before and after the Civil War. The group includes a sale document for two slaves 7.5 x 12.5 in. partially printed Savannah GA 7 April 1807. For one man named Jack and one woman named Cumbo (?) to Samuel Sturges for 600 dollars. With wax and paper seal. Plus a Ms document 1p Burke County GA 20 Oct. 1806 for the sale of one slave "Boston " to Samuel Sturges.Also included are several notes that clearly illustrate the familial connections between classes. These groups were more dependent on each other than most would admit - the upper classes "needed" the help the "help" needed jobs. Bonds of respect and congeniality did develop and familial titles ("mama " "aunt " etc.) were used.Letter 2pp 7 x 10 in. dated 28 Feb. 1946 n.p. stated but postmark on cover from Waynesboro GA. With cover on which there are pencil notes indicating the letter is from Liza Jones Servant to family all life - born a slave. In the letter Miss Jones reminisces complaining a bit about getting old: I am not much my self. Just to think I served you and yours nearly 40 years. Signed E.H.J.Plus a short note 5.5 x 6.5 in. with birthday greeting and Theas flowers came out of your yard. Eliza.Short note [original spelling retained] Dear Baby Wishing you Miny Happy years and a long life sweet and plesant is the wishes of your old black mama Eliza. With 2.5 x 3.5 photo. Second later note dated 1967 short reply to a letter received "From Lillie to Mrs. Mary." One photo included based on age photo is more likely Lillie than Eliza.Five silver gelatin images of African Americans picking cotton 3 x 5.5 in. Probably early 1900s. Three white men in center what is clearly their horse-drawn buggy in background. Mule-drawn wagon loaded over the top of the boards with bags of cotton.Five images of African American nannies with their charges. Approx. 3.25 x 5.25 in. Most dated 1923-1925. One with "Liza" & Henry Jr. Spring 1925. Poems on Various Subjects by IsabellaPoems on Various Subjects by Isabella Oliver (Sharp) Containing an Early Poem "On Slavery" Carlisle: A. Loudon (Whitehall) 1805. Hardbound in leather 16mo entered as the Cumberland County's first book of poetry. First edition. An early female poet "On Slavery" is Oliver's only poem that focuses specifically on slavery though several other poems mention her sympathy for "all who wear the human form" and her belief that having anti-slavery sentiments was a virtue befitting women. Pennsylvania had enacted a gradual emancipation law in 1780 which meant that in 1805 there were still slaves in the state and notices for run- aways in Cumberland County papers. There is a long list of subscribers in the back of the book.

Subjecting Slaves Emancipated to the Payment of Debts Kentucky Senate Bill 141 no year Subjecting slaves emancipated to the payment of debts and for other purposes. In summary the bill states that all slaves emancipated by last will and testament shall first pass to the executor to be held as assets to pay any debts of the estate but that no slave shall be used to pay a debt until all other assets of the estate are exhausted. We could find no reference to this bill or the language in it anywhere and it is likely this piece was printed for circulation among members of the General Assembly.
