Dennis Lyall (B. 1946) "US Flag": Dennis Lyall (B. 1946) "US Flag with Fireworks" Signed lower left. Oil on Canvas. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day of issue Maximum Card for the U. S. 22c Flag with Fireworks stamp issued May 9, 1987. . . The development of commerce and industry drew the American colonies together. To show their solidarity the Continental Colors were created during the Revolutionary War. This ensign served as a unifying symbol of the new United States. Following the War, the victorious fledgling nation sought to design a recognizable, distinctive ensign for use at sea, and as an appropriate symbol of the new country. Although a number of variant forms existed early on, the fundamental design of the flag had always included alternating red and white stripes. Since the Revolution, a field of blue had been added. Among the variants, most had some arrangement of stars across the blue field. Later, when the Constitution was signed and ratified, a standard version of the American Flag came into existence. The new official flag had thirteen stars -- one for each state -- arranged in a linear pattern on the blue field in the upper left corner of the flag. Thirteen alternating horizontal red and white stripes filled out the rest of the flag. This is the flag the United States has proudly called "Old Glory" and the flag which America has proudly flown the world over for nearly two centuries. Today, "Old Glory" continues to fly above public and private buildings. . . Image Size: 16 x 24 in. . Overall Size: 19. 75 x 26. 5 in. . Unframed. . THE TRANBY CROFT AFFAIR. THE PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED VISITORS ALBUM OF DELIGHTFUL CARICATURES WATERCOLOURS ALBUMEN PRINTS AND PHOTOCOLLAGES BY SUSANNAH WILSON the approximately 1000 signatures (many occuring more than once) collected on numerous occasions at Tranby Croft, Yorkshire at and house parties and balls throughout England, Monte Carlo and elsewhere between December 1890 and August 1897 including those of the Wilsons, Lycett-Greens, their extended families, many of their millieux and eight of the witnesses in the trial that became known as the 'Royal Baccarat Scandal', Prince Albert Victor "Eddy" Duke of Clarence (1864-1892) (including an extremely rare example of a photograph taken by the Prince and, beside his repeated signature, a curious pictogram of unknown significance) and Maharajah Prince Duleep Singh (1838-1893) and his second wife and family, the seats including Bramham, Sandbeck and Escrick Parks, Yorkshire and Renishaw Hall, Breadsall Priory and Bretby Park, Derbyshire, on fifty nine linen-hinged card leaves (290 x 225mm) aeg, tooled green morocco (worn) [c1890] Provenance: Found in a locked bureau purchased at a Derbyshire farm sale by the present owner in the early 1980s. This unusually elaborate example of an album illustrated with photocollage is of a type created by many aristocratic young women from the mid 1860s to the 1890s. In their leaves the conventions of photography are wittily flouted, with often highly amusing results. The Princess Alexandra Album (Royal Collection) of the Princess of Wales and those of ladies of the Paget, Sackville-West and Jocelyn families are other notable examples. This one is of unique interest for it is from Tranby Croft, the house where the Prince of Wales illegally played at Baccarat. The sensational trial that resulted from an unsuccessful cover-up of an allegation of cheating that night was presided over by the biased Lord Chief Justice Coleridge from 1st-9th June 1891. A media frenzy ensued since the Prince was required to attend as a witness, much to the displeasure of Queen Victoria, and it remains one of the most notorious trials for slander in British legal history. The owner of the album, Susannah West Wilson, subsequently Menzies then Holford, always known as "Tottie" (1864-1943) must have kept an earlier one since, during the trial, it emerged that the unsuccessful plaintiff, Sir William Gordon-Cumming had asked the Prince of Wales on the 11th September 1890 to put his signature "in Miss Wilson's Birthday Book". The first entry in the present album is dated three months after the incident on 11th September 1890, but there is a tantalising possible reference to the outcome for, when the Wilsons were briefly at their London house, 17 Grosvenor Place, where they stayed during the trial, there is a tiny watercolour of a carriage making its way in celebration along a street of public rejoicing above the perhaps cryptic caption "The Return fr. Crystal Palace Fireworks". The album brings vividly to life the hectic whirl and leisured lives of the arriviste Wilsons. Their colossal fortune from ship building had been amassed from nothing in a couple of generations. Their ultimate acceptance in Society but also, paradoxically, their fate, was to be sealed by the future King Edward VII on his fateful visit to Tranby Croft. A double portrait of Tottie Wilson and her sister Ethel, painted by James Sant, RA and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1881 was sold by Order of the Executors of the late Sir Edward Stephen Lycett-Green, Bt, Christie's, Contents of Ken Hill, Norfolk, 13 September 1999, lot 610. (Principal Sources: Havers (Sir M), E Grayson and P Shankland, The Royal Baccarat Scandal, 1977, Attwood (G M), The Wilsons of Tranby Croft, 1988 and Siegel (E), Playing with Pictures the Art of Victorian Photocollage Catalogue of the Exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, 10 October 2009 - 3 January 2010).
WELTY, EUDORA. Archive of 36 items Signed, or Inscribed and Signed, "Eudo," to her childhood friend, Willie Spahn. Chiefly letters and postcards from three trips to Europe between 1949 and 1954, mostly personal subjects, but including some personalities and incidents that would later find their way into stories and books. Size and format varies. an interesting archive, should be examined. Vp [chiefly Italy, France, and England], 1949-54
The correspondence starts in October 1949, after Eudora won a Guggenheim award. This, her first trip abroad, takes her to Italy (Genoa, Palermo, San Remo, and Naples), then to Paris, where she spends the Holidays; then to the Riviera (Nice, Beaulieu, Monaco), back to Florence, then Dublin and London before returning to Capri, Assissi, Venice and sailing home on the S.S. Saturnia in June. There are seven letters and thirteen picture postcards sent during her seven month stay.
Some excerpts: in a letter from Genoa, she describes a character on the ship: "There was an old man who spoke an amazing dialect (so I was told) from out from Naples--he had grizzly hair that stood up on his head, dirty pants, an an old green sweater-and a ten cent whistle. When the notion struck him--TWEET!" [elements of this trip were incorporated into the story "Going to Naples."] Later, from Beaulieu, she describes having confetti stuffed into her mouth as part of the Carnival celebration, and the "Grosse Tetes" (papier-mâché heads) in various forms, and the fireworks display which was "the finest I''ve ever seen, even from the hills over the fair ground at age 10," and points out that the "British element here is strong," attempting to capture the accent in sentences overheard during a rain storm: "''Yes I''m seldom deterred by the weathah! At tea time I generellah ventchah FAWTH!''"
In 1951, she travels to England, writing from Ireland, Brighton, Folkestone, Hythe and London. There are 5 postcards mentioning Elizabeth Bowen''s gardens, sending a story to "Bessie," and asking if Willie wants to read it.
The third trip--in 1954--is to the UK, visiting Cambridge, London, Edinburgh and Corlagh. Included are 2 long ALsS, in one of which she reports on life at the University--taking classes, giving lectures, living in "undergraduate quarters"--calling it a "queer experience & so far I have found no kindered spirits"; finds her new publisher, Hamish Hamilton "full of fun"; the gloom of the weather is dispelled by visits from Elizabeth Bowen and Elizabeth Spencer, and is cutting a class given by another southerner, a "negro, who is lecturing on Race"; mentions that she is thought to be the first woman to sit at the trestle dining table of Peterhouse College. Also includes 3 Autograph Postcards Signed.
Finally, a group of miscellaneous, undated postcards from Lisbon, London, Dublin, etc., and some birthday cards, etc.
