- LEE JACKSON (NY, 1909-2002) "The Bathgate
LEE JACKSON (NY, 1909-2002) "The Bathgate Market, Bronx", monumental oil on hardboard, signed and dated lower right "L. Jackson, 40", also signed and titled verso, depicting the traditional Jewish Kosher fish market in what was the most crowded neighborhood in the Bronx in the 30's and 40's. The image has assembled many genre vignettes in the winter night on a sidewalk under a single electric light with a fire barrel for warmth. Two elderly men are playing a violin and a guitar at center. Fish deals figure prominently, including a cat making off with his prize. The most unique moment being a newlywed couple in very Russian looking white coats and caps. Housed in a specialty gilt molded panel frame with central rank of raised stars, OS: 45" x 58", SS: 31 1/2" x 47 1/2".

- A DRESDEN TWENTY-SEVEN PIECE PARCEL
A DRESDEN TWENTY-SEVEN PIECE PARCEL GILT AND GREEN GROU...A DRESDEN TWENTY-SEVEN PIECE PARCEL GILT AND GREEN GROUND PORCELAIN COFFEE SERVICE, BY RICHARD KLEMM, GERMAN, EARLY 20TH CENTURY, a gift from President and Mrs. Woodrow Wilson to Mr. and Mrs. Jesse H. Jones, a porcelain coffee service for twelve and each piece hand painted in colors with reserves of courting couples in 18th century attire, framed by raised gilt leafy branches within an apple green ground and reversing to an underside with overglaze blue crowned "RK / Dresden / Germany," comprising twelve petal rimmed coffee cups with twelve matching saucers, one tall lidded coffee pitcher, one two handled sugar bowl with lid, and one cream pitcher, the coffee pitcher height: 8 1/2", width: 5 1/2", depth: 3 1/2". Note: This porcelain coffee set was a gift to Mr. & Mrs. Jesse H. Jones from the President and First Lady Woodrow Wilson. It is interesting to note that Mr. Jones returned to Houston in 1919 after having served as Director General of Military Relief for the American Red Cross during World War I (1914-1918). By December of 1920 he married Mary Gibbs, a native of Mexia, Texas. This porcelain set's blue factory marks are from the late 19th century/early 20th century and combined with the painted subject of 18th century style courting couples, as well as being a gift to Mr. and Mrs. Jesse H. Jones (not just Mr. Jones), points to the probability that it was a wedding gift to the newlyweds for their December 1920 nuptials. Provenance: Property from the Jesse H. Jones and Houston Endowment Collection, all proceeds to benefit the Houston Food Bank.

- MINIATURE ROMAN STONE PHALLUS PENDANTRoman,
MINIATURE ROMAN STONE PHALLUS PENDANTRoman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. This is an interesting hand carved stone amulet in the form of a phallus, symbolic of virility and fertility. The male genitalia are quite naturalistic, featuring a flaccid, curved penis over round testicles with incised swirls as pubic hair above. Attached atop the pendant is a suspension loop to string this piece on a cord as a protective pendant. Pendants such as this were often worn by soldiers in the field as a sign of their masculinity as well as by newlywed husbands hoping to increase their virility and fertility. In addition, disembodied examples like this were used as what Pliny described as a "medicus invidiae" to ward against bad luck and evil forces. The loop on this example is intact and perfect, and still could be worn today as a very bold accessory. Size: 1" L x 0.5" W (2.5 cm x 1.3 cm); 2" H (5.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, Volume II, 1978.Boynton L.O.J. High Victorian Furniture: The Example of Marsh and Jones ofLeeds Furniture History Society, Journal III, 1967 where a transcribed copy of the Titus Salt order dated 8th August 1866 is seen in Appendix II (the rooms described are those at Baildon Lodge and not Milner Field.)Note: Titus Salt Jr, the youngest son of Sir Titus Salt, married Catherine Crossley in 1866 and immediately moved into the newly vacant Baildon Lodge just outside Bradford, Leeds. While living at Baildon Lodge, the newlywed homemakers commissioned the local firm Marsh & Jones to supply a large number of furnishings from a grand piano to basic toilet wares between 1865-67. Marsh & Jones employed the designer Charles Bevan to provide the Salts with the most modern designs in the reformed gothic style. Along with Bruce Talbert exhibiting a handful of 'medieval' or 'old English' pieces (including the Pericles cabinet) on the Holland & Son stand at the 1867 Paris Exhibition, it is widely accepted Bevan's designs for the Salts marked a turning point in British taste.Between 1871 and 1873 the Salts moved to their partially built country house, Milner Field, with building work continuing around them they took the contents of Baildon Lodge with them. The architect used was Thomas Harris (c.1930-1900), a little-known architect from London. The house too was built in the reformed gothic style with ornamental metalwork by Messrs Richardson, Slade & Co., furniture and panelling by Messrs Marsh & Jones, Stained glass by Messrs Saunders & Co. and cartoons and frescos painted by Frederick Weekes. The final two artists are best known for their collaborations with William Burges.Catherine Salt was an avid musician and gifted singer and regularly sang at the many soirees the couple hosted. The music room suite that included these chairs would have been of great importance to her and so would no doubt have followed her when she left Milner Fields in 1903. Illustrations of the grand piano, duet stool and music cabinet from this commission were published in The Building News of 1st March 1867. Both the piano and the duet stool are in the collection of Lotherton Hall, Leeds. Our chairs feature a distinctive A-frame to their backs which can be seen on the en-suite music cabinet and the sheet music stand on the piano. The duet stool (at Lotherton Hall) retains its original paper label from the makers, this label is hand inscribed with job number 99127. By studying the pieces with direct Salt provenance in the Lotherton Hall collection, we can see the range of job numbers the commission took up. ranging from 99092 (a chamber pot of pedestal form) to 99152 (a reclining chair).
