HEO GEON (KOREAN, 1908-1987) 60 ¼" x 17" each of 8 panels Large eight-panel screen, hand painted in polychrome on rice paper depicting landscape, silk brocade borders and wooden frame with metal fittings, inscribed in the upper right corner:
"Enjoying the fresh morning air, (I) stepped into an old temple. The sunlight just came out, and shone only upon trees on high grounds / The narrow winding path led to a hidden corner, where (I) found a Chan meditation hut set amid greens and flowers. / The flying birds looked to be delighted by the mountain landscape, and my mind seemed to be purified by the pond water reflections. / Sounds in the universe, all sunk into deep silence here except the ringing temple bell and chanting Sutra. / Created by Nan Nong (the author’s art name), the master of Un Lim San Bang (Mountain House Un Lim) (note: This poem is the entire work of “A visit to the Meditation Hall behind Poshan Temple” originally created by Chang Jian (708-765), a Tang Dynasty poet.)

Provenance: Estate of Dr. Ye Yong Chun (Korean, 1910-1994), who served in the South Korean government, notably as Head of Civil Affairs in the Ministry of Education in 1944, Minister in Office of Governor-General of Korea, Vice Governor and Governor of Bank of Korea (1951-1961), Minister of Construction from (1964-1966), Chairman of Korean Branch of International LiONS Club, Chair of Korean International Law Association and Deputy Chair of Democratic-Republican Party; brought to the USA in the early 1980s by descent in the family, thence to current owner.
