RARE WOODEN SOUTH SEAS VASE, SUNRISEDeep flambe ink decoration over Maori kauri wood.
Inspired by the flambe and sung-glaze craze of the 1920's, this kauri-wood vase titled SUNRISE was exhibited at the 1925/26 New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition. One of only 3 pieces of the style and make known to exist from the exhibition (a similar pair are housed at the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand) and marked on bottom with title, date, and the exhibition initials. An extremely unique piece in style, composition and cultural rarity. Observe minor scuffing and dinging to surface finish throughout, consistent with age and handling. No restoration present.
