- (53 PC) IITTALA GLASSWARE SET BY TAPIO
(53 PC) IITTALA GLASSWARE SET BY TAPIO WIRKKALADESCRIPTION: (51 Pc) Glassware Glasses Set. Designed by Tapio Wirkkala and produced by Iittala. Unique design with unusual stem feature what looks like a trapped air bubble but is actually an homage to the art of glassblowing itself. Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was a multitalented design genius, widely considered a leading figure of modern Finnish industrial art. Wirkkala's wide ranging portfolio spans from glass, furniture and product design to sculpture, city planning, art, graphics and even creating banknotes for the Finnish treasury. As his reputation grew internationally, Wirkala exhibited throughout the world but he was a recluse by nature. His favorite place was a spot so remote within the deep woodlands of middle Finland that helicopters delivered prototypes to his hut since no car could reach him. It was in nature that he found his much loved solitude and the inspiration for forms that industry could produce or artwork could create. Throughout his incredibly productive career, Wirkkala received numerous awards including three gold medals at the Milan Triennale, the Lunning Prize, Pro Finlandia Medal and the Prince Eugen Medal. In 1946, Wirkkala won his first design award in a competition sponsored by Iittala that would mark a lifelong relationship with lasting effects on his career and the company. As Iittala artistic director, Wirkkala’s unique artistic vision helped establish the company’s global reputation. Throughout his legendary career, the uniquely talented artist created more than four hundred glass objects for Iittala, many of which, like the Ultima Thule and Tapio series remain popular today. - Rare Georg Jensen, USA, Three-Piece
Rare Georg Jensen, USA, Three-Piece Sterling Silver Child's Set, 1941-1950, New York, including a child's fork, l. 3", spoon, l. 6", and knife, 7-1/4", each with a spatulate handle threaded on the underside, no monograms, 1.93 total t. oz., excluding the stainless steel bladed knife, complete with the original Georg Jensen, USA felt storage roll and box. During World War II, submarine warfare prohibited transatlantic shipping of the already greatly reduced output of Georg Jensen wares to the firm's New York shop. Frederick Lunning, director of Jensen's retail outlet at 667 Fifth Ave., New York, established Georg Jensen, USA and arranged for the domestic manufacture of silver items inspired by Jensen's wares, including designs by Alphonse Lapaglia, Joan Polsdorfer and Madeline Turner. After the war, when Jensen silver once again became available, Lunning ended production of "Georg Jensen, USA" silverware, which has today become quite collectable in its own right. Lunning continued to promote Scandinavian design, establishing the Lunning prize awarded annually from 1951 to 1971.
