CONDITION
The wooden sculpture appears in age-appropriate condition. Overall dust and grime visible to the naked eye. Minor wear and rubbing to the wooden corners, tail and haunches. No significant issues to report otherwise.

GRAND TOUR BRONZE "LION OF LUCERNE" MEMORIAL STATUE The Lion Monument, or the Lion of Lucerne, (German: Löwendenkmal) is a rock relief in Lucerne, Switzerland, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), and hewn in 1820-21 by Lukas Ahorn (1789-1856). It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
This large high-quality heavy patinated bronze was probably manufactured for wealthy Americans, is marked verso "Rev Susse Frs. Ed-is, Paris", with the inscription on the front as the original reading "Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti MDCCXCII". 9 1/2" x 20" x 6"".

WOODEN "LION OF LUCERNE" SCULPTURE Grand Tour Era Wood Carving, a representation of the controversial Swiss sandstone monument in Lucerne honoring the sacrifice of Swiss Guards defending the King of France during the French Revolution; the sculpture depicts a dying lion impaled with a spear, with its paw resting on a shield with the French fleur de lys, with the carved words "Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti" (to the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss) and the Roman numeral date of 1792 below; with a partially legible "Lucerne" paper label affixed to the base, 3 1/4" high, 7 5/8" x 2 5/8". Surface wear.
