Adolph D. Rinck (French, c. 1810-1875, active New Orleans, 1840-1871), "Portrait of John Woodhouse Audubon (1812-1862)", oil on canvas, signed "ARinck" and dated "1840" upper left, 27 in. x 22 in., in an antique frame. $10000/15000 Provenance: James B. Pelletier Gallery, 34 Bourbon Street, New Orleans, sold 13 August 1900 to C. F. Gunther of Chicago; Judge Nathaniel Sears and Laura Davidson Sears, Sears Gallery of Fine Arts, Elgin Academy, Elgin, Illinois, c. 1924-1967; unlocated auction sale of Sears Gallery deaccessioning, probably Chicago, c. 1967, no. 1270, as "restored"; Kathleen Pari, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin; consigned by her to DeLind Fine Art, Inc. Milwaukee, 9 June 2000. Note: This essentially unknown painting is of considerable interest to the portraiture of the Audubon family. It represents the younger son of the great French-American naturalist John James Audubon (1785-1851); its nearly exact replication is a well-known miniature, also by Rinck, in the New-York Historical Society. That work, however, is considerably later than this original painting (it has traditionally been dated to the mid-1840s); and that Rinck miniature of "John Woodhouse Audubon" in New York is a pendant to a signed Rinck miniature representing this sitter's father, "John James Audubon," now in the R.W. Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport. Rinck's signed "J.J. Audubon" miniature in Shreveport, in turn, is an interpretation of a famous London engraving of 1835 by C. Turner, after a celebrated miniature of the great naturalist by Frederick Cruickshank of 1831. The entire Audubon family had moved to New York by October 1839, purchasing a house where within a month John Woodhouse was already hard at work on his reductions for the new edition of The Birds of America. In mid-February 1840 the young artist and his ailing bride passed briefly through Baltimore, Norfolk, and Wilmington en route to Charleston, where it was hoped she might recuperate; but sadly she died in September 1840. John Woodhouse Audubon returned to New York in late October. Rinck himself is documented only to have arrived in New Orleans by December 9,1840, presumably from Paris (where he had been a student of Delaroche). However, it is possible that Rinck met J.W. Audubon in either New York in the beginning of 1840 or in Charleston later that year, if Rinck came to America through either of these ports. Rinck must then have retained a reduction or sketch of it, which he would have used for his later paired miniatures of both father and son. He wrote to important people requesting a signed photo as well as a note or letter commenting on the importance of the Boy Scout movement in America. He received many positive responses from high-ranking generals, Presidents, politicians and civil leaders. Many wrote in glowing terms of the Boy Scouts’ importance while some wrote nothing at all, but few said anything of a negative nature. Items are mainly from 1930 to 1950, with a few earlier pieces.

Peluso (Hudson River Press, 1977), p. 7-9 for a reference to this painting, noting it is one of the last paintings signed by John and James Bard, and John Bard's demise., The Wilson G. Hunt was built at New York in 1849 for the excursion trade to Coney Island, but on March 2, 1850, shortly after her completion, she was sent around the Horn to San Francisco, arriving there in early 1850. She was immediately placed in the Sacramento River trade and became a "bonanza steamer," carrying gold speculators to the gold fields. She proceeded to make a fortune for her owners, clearing over $1 million in her first year. The steamer was sent to Victoria, British Columbia in August 1858, and ran for a short time on the New Westminster route. In October 1858 she was withdrawn, and then in the following year she replaced the steamer Constitution on Puget Sound. Early in the 1860s she was bought by the Oregon Steam Navigation Company and taken to the Columbia River, where she operated on the Cascade Route under command of Captain John Wolf. She ran on the Columbia until 1869, carrying from 250 to 300 passengers, 100 head of stock and a substantial amount of freight on a single trip. The Wilson G. Hunt was rebuilt in 1865, and in 1869 she returned to Puget Sound. She continued to be used on various runs until 1890, when she was broken up and sold for iron scrap to Cohn & Company of San Francisco. Her hull was burned shortly thereafter. Twin brothers John and James Bard were self-taught ship portraitists who specialized in steamships. The painting of the Wilson G. Hunt was one of the last two paintings signed jointly by the Bard brothers, and it has been speculated that John Bard went off in search of gold shortly after the completion of this work. By March of 1850 James Bard was the only signer of these works. After November 1855, John reappears and is known to have become a "destitute painter" in and out of New York almshouses until his death October 18, 1856. James lived a long and artistically productive life. He died 41 years after his brother, on March 26, 1897. Dimensions: Oil on canvas, relined, 28.75" x 49.5". Framed 39.25" x 59.25".
