36-Star American National Flag36-Star American National Flag from the Benjamin Harrison Estate Worsted wool 55 x 96 in. 7-7-8-7-7 star pattern. Two names are inked on the hoist but neither can be clearly made out. Framed under plexiglass to 67 x 106 in with brass plaque reading Civil War Flag / Flown Over / Indiana State Capital / Corydon Indiana / 1865. The ''Indiana State Capital'' refers to the building which served as the original state capital from 1816-1825 though Indianapolis was the official capital when this flag was flown. The 36-star flag was made official upon Nevada's accession to the Union on July 4 1865 and was replaced two years later when Nebraska achieved statehood. The workmanship and non-standard star pattern indicate this flag was probably a homemade version sewn prior to July 4th so that the residents of Corydon could celebrate Independence Day and the admission of a new state with the proper flag.
