- AMERICAN SCHOOL CAST-IRON MODEL OF MR.
AMERICAN SCHOOL CAST-IRON MODEL OF MR. PEANUTWith a removable hat.
40 x 15 x 15 in.
Note: This cast iron figure of the Planters’ Mr. Peanut spokes character is likely one of a number of models produced in the 1920s and 1930s. Designed to sit atop fence posts surrounding the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company factories in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and later, Suffolk, Virginia, this example is likely from the Suffolk factory, which was established in 1913. Another similar example from the Suffolk factory was donated by Kraft Foods to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History for a 2015 exhibition titled “American Enterprise.” The exhibition told the story of business and marketing innovation in America. Mr. Peanut was born from a sketch created by schoolboy Antonio Gentile in 1916, when Planters hosted a contest to design a logo to set themselves apart from growing competition. Over a hundred years later, Mr. Peanut remains the beloved face of Planters Nuts.
