- ANCIENT AFRICAN NOK TERRACOTTA HEAD
ANCIENT AFRICAN NOK TERRACOTTA HEAD FRAGMENTDESCRIPTION: Ancient African Nok Terracotta Head Fragment with carved protruded symmetric eyes and lips. The Nok culture produced sculptures of human heads and figures of humans and animals in terracotta, the earliest such sculpture produced in sub-Saharan Africa. Near life-size terracotta heads were often part of a fuller figure but this portion has usually been lost. Most Nok sculpture is hollow and coil-built like pottery. Finely worked to a resilient consistency from local clays and gravel, the millennia-long endurance of these ancient objects is a testament to the technical ability of their makers. CIRCA: Possibly 500 BC to 200 CE. ORIGIN: Africa. - CA. 1893 GREAT AMERICAN COWBOY RACE
CA. 1893 GREAT AMERICAN COWBOY RACE - BUFFALO BILLThis is an outstanding, historic and rare photograph showing the start of the Chadron-Chicago Cowboy Race to the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, June 12th, 1893, by photographer Foss & Eason Chadron, Nebraska. The large format photograph is marked in the negative, “Ready for the start Charon-Chicago Cowboy RACE June 13th, 1893, Photographed by Foss & Eason Chadron Neb.” The great 1,000-mile endurance race from Chadron, Nebraska to Chicago, Illinois is considered the undisputed “Great American Cowboy Race” that started June 13, 1893 with a field of nine riders, each with two horses. On the morning of June 27, 1893, the riders made it to Chicago and the “1,000 Mile Tree” at the site of the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, but the winning order was disputed. The racer was apparently the idea of Chadron jokester John G. Maher. Seven of the nine riders finished, with some traveling up to ninety miles a day. Nebraska badman “Doc” Middleton was an rider. John Berry won, riding Sandy and Poison, but was disqualified for having prior knowledge of the route. Chadron officials declared Joe Gillespie and Charlie Smith winners. Upon research of this race, and this image, none of the original photographs of the start, such as our example offered in this lot, are in the public market. The image is light and the large card has some loss to the edge. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. Measures 9 7/8” by 8”.
- HARD STONE DRESS CANE-Ca. 1920 -Large
HARD STONE DRESS CANE-Ca. 1920 -Large red jasper ball knob of a striking intense color with the usual and natural dark iron layers, richly figured rosewood shaft and a horn ferrule. The turned grooves on the silver collar hint to the Art Deco while a full set of clear hallmarks to its German origin. Half Moon and Crown for silver beside an “800” for the precious metal title as well as an unidentified maker’s mark. Generally seen as mascots and likely to be individually chosen for personal reasons, canes with hard stone knobs started to become popular in the third part of the 19th Century to reach their peak around 1920. Their varieties make them great and decorative collectables. -Jaspers have been revered by ancient peoples and civilizations throughout the world as sacred and powerful stones of protection, for both the physical and spiritual realm. They were known as the “rain bringers” and nurturers, healers of the spirit and stones of courage and wisdom. Today, red jasper is still known as the stone of endurance, a gentle, but vital energy stimulator. -H. 2” Diameter, O.L. 37 ½” -$200-$300

CHRIS CALLE (B 1961) "FRANK BORMAN & JAMES LOVELL"Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Frank Borman and James Lovell" Signed lower right. Watercolor taped to Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Dominica 25th Anniversary of the Moon Landing stamps issued July 26, 1994.
Loaded with record amounts of fuel and supplies, Gemini 7 was the heaviest spacecraft yet to be launched by the United States when it lifted off on December 4, 1965. The extra provisions would be necessary if command pilot Frank Borman and co-pilot James Lovell were to set a new world endurance mark by orbiting the Earth for two weeks. But breaking records was just one objective NASA had in mind for Gemini 7. Some five weeks earlier, on October 25, Gemini 6 had been left at the launch pad because the Atlas-Agena rocket it was to rendezvous with had failed, breaking up before reaching orbit. With no target vehicle available, the Gemini 6 mission was put on hold indefinitely. However, NASA now had Gemini 7 in orbit and decided that it could act as a target for Gemini 6. So on the morning of December 15, astronauts Walter Schirra and Thomas P. Stafford were launched into orbit aboard Gemini 6. Just six hours after liftoff, the two spacecraft were less than two miles apart. Fifteen minutes after that, they were within 20 feet of each other. Photographs later revealed that the two spacecraft had come as close as two or three feet. The rendezvous was an amazing success. Gemini 6 splashed down the next day. Borman and Lovell completed their two-week mission aboard Gemini 7, splashing down on December 18, holders of a new world record for time spent in space.

- SIGNED 20TH C. INUIT SOAPSTONE SQUIRREL,
SIGNED 20TH C. INUIT SOAPSTONE SQUIRREL, JOE TALIRUNILI...Native American, Canada, northern Quebec, Nunavik, Puvirnituq, ca. 1960s to 1970s CE. Signed by Joe Talirunili (Inuit, 1893-1976) in English and syllabics. A charming soapstone sculpture by renowned Inuit printmaker and sculptor Joe Talirunili depicting an arctic ground squirrel known as a siksik. The adorable animal sits on its haunches supported by long feet and leans forward as a long tail curves up from its backside. His lengthy snout displays protruding teeth or a tongue below a delineated nose, sizable, almond-shaped eyes, and petite pointed ears. Note how the tail is attached via some sort of adhesive; Talirunili would often mend broken pieces of his sculpture by simply gluing them back on. This sense of immediacy in both material selection and execution are intuitive to the scenarios they depict, highlighting themes of resilience and endurance. Size: 6" L x 2.3" W x 3.8" H (15.2 cm x 5.8 cm x 9.7 cm)
Born in either 1893, 1899, or 1906, Joe Talirunili was known for his depictions of the harshness of the northern climate and the survivalist lifestyle of a people dependent on a barren landscape, often crudely executed, as though emphasizing the artist's urgency and conviction for documenting his thoughts. The rugged aesthetic Talirunili favored for his sculptures set them apart from the majority of those being produced from Puvirnituq at the time, which were increasingly being recognized for their "idealized, dreamlike quality," smooth surfaces and fine details. His sculpture "The Migration" made Talirunili one of the most sought after Inuit artists, as it held the world record for a price paid for an Inuit artist at auction in 2012, a record that was only surpassed when Talirunili's "Migration Boat" (early to mid-1970s) sold for $408,000 in 2019. Both sculptures portray one of his childhood experiences, when families set sail in an umiak (large sealskin boat) to travel to better hunting grounds. This scene was repeatedly depicted in Joe's carvings, drawings and prints. Talirunili's work has been included in over 30 exhibitions and was featured on a 14-cent Canadian stamp in 1976.
When speaking of Joe Talirunili in "Canadian Inuit Print Artist/Printer Biographies," Sandra Barz states, "He left a legacy of sculpture, prints and drawings, which were unique in the way he crafted even the most mundane subject. His owls were horned 'Joe' owls, his human figures, animals and hunting scenes were instantly distinguishable, as were the haunting 'migration' boat scenes, whether rendered as drawings, prints or sculptures. Perhaps redundant as identification, but part of his enormous charm, was the inevitable 'JOE' (sometimes backwards) carved into his stones, almost as part of the image. His contributions to editioned print collections started with the initial release in 1962 and continued without a break through the next 10 collections for a total of some 70 stonecut prints. He cut his own stones and probably tried his hand at printing, too, on occasion."
