WAR OF 1812, HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM HOME Moses Goodman, Jr. (September 25, 1781 - November 9, 1836) was a deacon in the church of West Hartford, Connecticut, and a colonel in the War of 1812, who commanded 83 officers and men in 1814 of the Connecticut First Regiment against the British Army. He was the son of Moses Goodman (June 20, 1750 - August 17, 1831) who became famous for delivering $30,000 to George Washington's army at Valley Forge in dark brown saddlebags. This letter from his wife, Prudence Hurlbut Goodman (June 3, 1783 - September 13, 1857), illustrates what life was like at the time. The letter describes life at home and expresses a great desire for her husband to return safe. 2p.p., ALS folded into a letter and sent from Hartford Conn in a stampless envelope dated September 8th, with a 10 cent charge.

GEN LEONIDAS POLK HANDWRITTEN SIGNED LETTER Leonidas Polk (1838-1864), signed letter in his hand. ALS, as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana and founder of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Confederate States of America. This was before becoming a General in the Confederate Army. Letter is to Reverend L, discussing religion. General Leonidas Lafayette Polk, second cousin to President James K. Polk, was a planter in Maury County, Tennessee, and a bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana. A graduate of West Point, he resigned his military commission in 1827 and was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1830. He served as Bishop of Louisiana from 1841 to 1864. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Jefferson Davis convinced Polk to accept a commission in the army of the Confederate States. Polk agreed and was commissioned a major general commanding Department No. 2 in 1861. During the Atlanta Campaign, Polk was killed in action on June 14, 1864, while on a scouting mission in Kennesaw Georgia.

MARTIN LUTHUR, CANON OF THE MASS, EARLY PRINTING Canon of the Mass by Martin Luther, printed in the early 1500s by Jacobus Wolff de Pforzheim. Very early printing of Martin Luther's Canon of the Mass, set in Guttenberg type. Highlighted with red and black printing. Folium XX to folium XXIII contains the EXSULTET IAM ANGELICA TURBA with printed notes on the music staff, the opening words of the Praeconium, or Hymn of Praise, sung by the deacon in celebration of Christ's Resurrection after the Lumen Christi procession has entered the church for the solemn service of the Easter vigil. The book is bound in hand tooled pigskin in a renaissance binding with two clasps. Decoration on both front and back boards. Spine features raised bands.

The lack of proportion in the figures is due to the fact that they were painted on the door posts, on which the painting space was very narrow and the figures were therefore unduly attenuated. RELIGIOUS ICON, 18TH C. "The Cardinal Feast Days, May", egg tempera on wooden panel, 20 3/4" x 16 7/8". Losses, repaired and stabilized. Depicting the Complete Resurrection and Descent into Hell at center. The lower right hand corner depicts St. Peter rushing up from his boat to meet Jesus, who still needs to eat after his resurrection, they feast on fish at the shore. From the top left corner, clockwise: The Old Testament Trinity; Birth of the Virgin; The Presentation of the Virgin to the Temple; The Annunciation; The Presentation of Jesus at the Temple; The Transfiguration; Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Patriarch Makarios raises the Holy Cross in his two hands. Two Deacons flank him holding his robe. He is flanked by the Emperor Constantine the Great and Empress Helena; in the background is the basilica of the Resurrection built by Constantine in Jerusalem. The Dormition; The Ascension (not the usual depiction: the Virgin is included in this iconography as a symbol representing the Church); the principal place is given to the Mother of God, who is flanked by two angels with wings in white. Christ ascends in glory seated in an aureole, supported by two angels, a group of apostles, one kneeling and two standing to the right of the Virgin.
