- EARL E. COLLINS O/C MARINE PAINTING,
EARL E. COLLINS O/C MARINE PAINTING, CHARLES W. MORGANEarl Edward Collins (Connecticut/New York, 1925-1992) oil on canvas maritime painting "Charles W. Morgan" depicting the whaling ship named for owner Charles Waln Morgan (1796-1861), anchored at sea with an American flag, and several male figures boarding a small boat to pursue a whale visible in the water to the left. Titled and signed "Earl Collins" lower right. Housed in a wooden frame with off white liner and wooden fillet. Sight: 19 3/4" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed: 27 3/4" H x 31 3/4" W. Note: "The Charles W. Morgan is the last of an American whaling fleet that numbered more than 2,700 vessels. Built and launched in 1841, the Morgan is now America's oldest commercial ship still afloat--only the USS Constitution is older. The Morgan was launched on July 21, 1841, from the yard of Jethro and Zachariah Hillman in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Over an 80-year whaling career, the Morgan embarked on 37 voyages with most lasting three years or more. Built for durability, not speed, it roamed every corner of the globe in pursuit of whales. The Morgan is known as a "lucky ship," having successfully navigated crushing Arctic ice, countless storms, Cape Horn roundings and, after finishing its whaling career, even the Hurricane of 1938. After its whaling days ended in 1921, the Morgan was preserved by Whaling Enshrined, Inc. and exhibited at Edward H.R. Green's estate at Round Hill in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, until 1941. In November of that year, the Morgan came to Mystic Seaport Museum where it has since dominated the waterfront at Chubb's Wharf." (source: "Charles W. - ATTRIBUTED TO VÍCTOR PATRICIO LANDALUZE
ATTRIBUTED TO VÍCTOR PATRICIO LANDALUZE (SPANISH/CUBAN ...attributed to VÍCTOR PATRICIO LANDALUZE (Spanish/Cuban 1828-1889) A PAINTING, "Hombre en una Mula (Man on a Mule)," oil on canvas. 36 1/2" x 28 1/2" Note: A costumbrismo style painter, Víctor Patricio de Landaluze, was born in Bilbao, Spain, later settling in Cuba, where he taught at the Academy of San Alejandro in Havana. His political views staunchly supporting colonial economy are noted throughout the breadth of his work. His work, for better or worse, captures the barbarism of plantation life that shaped 19th century Cuba. The present work shows a front facing figure of a Cuban man with straw hat, collared shirt, wearing a leather apron and nicely cobbled shoes. He sits atop a mule, which is flanked by iron strapped wood barrels, likely for selling water. His empty bag perhaps held bread. A orange and yellow hued sky smolders, indicating his workday is done, over the atmospheric skyline of Havana. Likely somewhere near Fortress of San Carlos de la Cabaña looking West, the natural grasses with red flowers, a landscape quiet at days end, with familiar Spanish colonial domes dotting the skyline. The mule is adorned with a blue silk fringe passamenterie. An unusually noble presentation of a Cuban at days end during the late 19th century. Provenance: Property from a South Texas Collector.
Condition:
The canvas has been professionally restored with old wax liner. Unsigned. Stretcher marks, a few surface scratches, inpainting, minor surface soil, canvas trimmed, and no apparent signature, but overall in stable, good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age.
