ROSINA FLOWERS PATTERN BONE CHINA TEA CUPS AND SAUCERS, ENGLAND, MARKED 4999 (29 CUPS, 29 SAUCERS)Rosina Flowers Pattern Bone China Tea Cups and Saucers, England, Marked 4999 (29 cups, 29 saucers)
An important 'A' mark porcelain fluted coffee cup, painted with six alternate panels of flowers and a bird above two scrolls before flowing red ribbons, brown line rim above a black specked and gilt scrolling border, unmarked, c.1744-45, a 2cm section broken and repaired, 9cm. Cf. English Ceramic Circle Transactions, Vol. 18 Part 2, 2003, p.270 shows a similar cup from the collection of the British Museum (M&LA 1995, 11-3.1). The group of wares that have come to be known as 'A'-marked porcelain have been a subject of much deliberation since a "curious teapot" and three cups appeared for discussion at a 1937 meeting of the English Ceramic Circle. Some forty one pieces of this group are now recorded in the literature; the majority of them cups similar in style to the above. The British provenance of nearly all of these examples has helped quash an earlier suggestion that they were of Italian origin. Recent scientific research on some of the objects has confirmed the proximity of both the porcelain body and the glaze to the Heylyn and Frye patent of 1744, which had previously been thought of as an unworkable recipe. Research by Ramsay et al. (2001, 2003) put forward the view that this was an erroneous belief and this has subsequently changed the accepted chronology of British ceramic history. The currently accepted view is that these 'A'-marked wares represent the first production of porcelain in England, and that it was probably wares of this type that were shown to William Cookworthy in early 1745. The propinquity to the Heylyn and Frye patent, together with Anton Gabszewicz's stylistic comparisons to the 'drab' or 'mushroom' wares of early Bow have linked the group to an early phase of experimental production by this factory.

IMPORTANT HOMER LAUGHLIN JAR. East Liverpool, Ohio, ca. 1886-1889. Rare potpourri or perfume jar with reticulated lid. Pink with acanthus leaf handles, vining floral decoration and cobalt reserves with angel and flowers. 19"h. Ex Collection of Fred Mutchler. Illustrated in "The Dish", Fall 2003, exhibited at DACO and exhibited and illustrated in Richmond, A Tradition of Progress: Ohio Decorative Arts, 1860-1945. During the second half of the 19 century, East Liverpool was one of the principal pottery centers of the Ohio River Valley. In 1872, Homer and Shakespeare Laughlin were awarded $5,000 from that same city to build their pottery. They found success quickly, winning an award for their white ware at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The following year, Homer Laughlin bought his brother out of the company and renamed it Homer Laughlin, and later changing the name to the Homer Laughlin China Company in 1896. The early years of Homer Laughlin were years of great expansion, largely through highly successful lines of white wares that were popular in hotels and other institutional settings. However, in the mid-1880s, Laughlin experimented with creating true porcelain, which the company succeeded producing in 1886. Local newspaper editor Jere Simms proclaimed Laughlin’s porcelain, “the finest, thinnest and most translucent of china can be produced in America.” In the ensuing few years, the Laughlin factory took porcelain one step further and produced pâte-sur-pâte (“paste on paste”) porcelain. Developed by Marc-Louis Solon (1835-1913), who worked both at the Sèvres Pottery in France and at Mintons in England, the technique involves creating relief decoration by painting on successive layers of slip. This laborious process allowed the decoration to retain the translucence that was so sought after in porcelain. It is not known who brought the pâte-sur-pâte technique to Laughlin and East Liverpool, but it was not produced for very long as the company discontinued porcelain production in 1889. Homer Laughlin would then return focus solely on earthenwares and continue to grow, ultimately establishing a ten-acre plant across the Ohio River at Newell, West Virginia. The company would later become well known for its popular line of colorful dinnerware, called Fiesta, which it introduced in 1936.
