In 1952, he began a collaboration with International Silver Co. to create Danish inspired Mid-Century Modernist silver, and moved his workshop to Meriden, CT. - FALIK NOVICK ARTS AND CRAFTS STERLING
FALIK NOVICK ARTS AND CRAFTS STERLING CHARGER 18" diameter Novick emigrated from Russia to New York City in 1893 at the age of 15. He had received training in his homeland in the metal arts. While in New York he continued perfecting his trade, but found little success. He decided to relocate, and their is speculative opinion that he crossed paths with Albert Hubbard's Roycrofters'. Falik would settle in Chicago in 1907 and by 1909 he had a small storefront offering his wares. Although he was accomplished in many forms, he excelled at large vessels in brass and copper and large sterling trays. By the time the Kalo Shop was opening, Falik was established. Many of the early copper bowls stamped "Kalo" were actually made by Novick, as well as many sterling trays until his death . His talent was recognized and was approached by the Georg Jensen company to sell his wares under their umbrella as with Alphonse Lapaglia and International. He would continue to be busy and produce wares until his death in 1957. This tray exhibits fine hammer strikes or martele throughout the piece, but is especially pronounced on the raised curved edge of the tray. The monogram is cut from sheet and soldered on, and can be removed if desired. The tray weighs approximately 55.97 troy ounces. Correct signature is on the reverse center.
- Rare Georg Jensen, USA, Three-Piece
Rare Georg Jensen, USA, Three-Piece Sterling Silver Child's Set, 1941-1950, New York, including a child's fork, l. 3", spoon, l. 6", and knife, 7-1/4", each with a spatulate handle threaded on the underside, no monograms, 1.93 total t. oz., excluding the stainless steel bladed knife, complete with the original Georg Jensen, USA felt storage roll and box. During World War II, submarine warfare prohibited transatlantic shipping of the already greatly reduced output of Georg Jensen wares to the firm's New York shop. Frederick Lunning, director of Jensen's retail outlet at 667 Fifth Ave., New York, established Georg Jensen, USA and arranged for the domestic manufacture of silver items inspired by Jensen's wares, including designs by Alphonse Lapaglia, Joan Polsdorfer and Madeline Turner. After the war, when Jensen silver once again became available, Lunning ended production of "Georg Jensen, USA" silverware, which has today become quite collectable in its own right. Lunning continued to promote Scandinavian design, establishing the Lunning prize awarded annually from 1951 to 1971.
