James W. Denver autograph letter, one page in light brown ink, integral to two other pages comprising a letter from a lady named "Lou" (to whom Denver writes the page) to Denver's mother (Sacramento, March 21, 1861), "My Dear Madam, So far as I am concerned, the senatorial contest is now over and I now have time to pay some attention to other things…the contest has developed so much falsehood and blackhearted ingratitude that I feel no desire to enter the political arena…My intention is to abandon politics altogether, and settle down to a quiet life, if there is to be any quiet in this country. I sincerely hope political matters may be settled down without civil dissent", signed "J.W. Denver" (James William Denver, 1817-92, Governor of Kansas Territory, Union Brigadier General, for whom the capital of Colorado was named), 10 x 7-3/4 in. (page, as folded). UNKNOWN (17TH CENTURY) KING SOLOMON GREETING THE QUEEN OF SHEBA Stumpwork, raised work and embroidery: h: 16 1/4 x w: 22 x d: 1 1/2 in. Framed; with a central image of Solomon seated on a throne receiving Sheba with her attendants, to the right shows a courtier holding a staff, includes castle, sea beast swimming in a lake also with a small boat surrounded by mountains and trees, surrounded by miniature animals including a stag, lion, rabbit, birds, charming frog on a lily pad, insects, butterflies and acorns (subtle symbols of support for Charles II), plants with many called "slips" in padded three dimensional applique, many done on fine linen with detached button hole stitch and needle weaving, petit point and attached to a satin foundation, with gilt metal, beads, seed pearls, lace, and mica, embroidered "16" and the letter "B" and faintly "G", traces of orignial drawing visible in spots, original frame, verso label Pembroke antiques ($9,200); Raised work designs as beautiful and detailed as this one were drawn by professionals (men at the time) as "kits" for well to do young ladies to stitch, transferring the designs from well known prints and engravings of the time, often taking contemporary images of current Kings and Queens (hence King Solomon resembles King Charles I) and also clothing biblical figures in contemporary fashion. The images were transferred by "pouncing" the design with a fabric "pouch" of charcoal through pin pricks on paper directly to the satin foundation; after completion being sent back to be finished. Stumpwork as exemplary as this example were high achievements by the young embroiderer and prized during and following the 17th Century. "Dear Sir, The interruption of the Post for several Weeks, prevented our receiving the melancholy account of your loss till within these few days. That we sympathize in the misfortune, and lament the decree which has deprivd you of so dutiful a Child, & the World of so promising a young Lady, stands in no need, I hope, of argument to proove; but the ways of Providence being inscrutable, and the justice of it not to be scand by the shallow eye of humanity, nor to be counteracted by the utmost efforts of human Power, or Wisdom; resignation, &, as far as the strength of our reason & religion can carry us, a chearful acquessence to the d[iv]ine will is what we are to aim at: & I am perswaded that your own good sense will arm you with fortitude to withstand the stroke, great as it is and enable you to console Mrs Bassett whose loss, & feelings upon the occasion, are much to be pitied. By Letters from Doctr Cooper, Presidt of the College in New York, my departure for that place is now fixd to about the 8th of May, which puts it out of my power to attend the Meeting in Williamsburg this Court; I have therefore, by Mr Henderson, Inclosd several Letters to, & drafts upon, different People for money, to Colo. Mrs Washington in her Letter to Mrs Bassett informs her of Jack Custis's engagemt with Nelly Calvert, Second daughter of Benedict Calvert Esqr. of Maryland; I shall say nothing further therefore on the Subject than that I could have wish'd he had postpond entering into the engagement till his Studies were finishd, not that I have any objection to the Match, as she is a girl of exceeding good Character but because I fear, as he has discoverd much fickleness already, that he may either change, and therefore injure the young Lady; or, that it may precipitate him into a Marriage before, I am certain, he has ever bestowd a serious thought of the consequences; by which means his education is Interrupted, & he perhaps, wishing to be at liberty again before he is fairly imbarked on those important duties. PLEASE NOTE (8/8/2016) Comments made via email by foremost American flag expert and historian Steven Hill on Co. H, 92nd NY flag: "Painted by Thomas Savory of Boston. He did several for individual Mass regiments, and judging from painting style, also subcontracted through Charles Eaton on Mass state colors "made" by Eaton. Also did colors for Maine (check out their website) and NH and Vmt. No flags signed so far as I know, but newspaper accounts on several Mass regiments mention handsome colors done by Savory, and those non-standard flags are still in existence in Mass. Very interesting in that eagle's vary greatly in size, many lap over one or more stars (as in this example). Stars apparently painted on in a rough circle prior to handing over to Savory, who then drew in eagle freehand, sometimes accidentally sizing it such that it ran over some stars. My favorite example is 13th Mass, two stars actually painted out with black paint and new stars of slightly different size and different paint jammed in wherever they would fit."Few flags North or South can we ever identify to actual hand that painted them! CIVIL WAR BATTLE FLAG OF THE 92ND NEW YORK INFANTRY. This all silk hand sewn flag was the first flag of the Co. F, 92nd New York, measuring 50" on hoist and 73" on fly. The 92nd was organized January, 1862, in Potsdam, New York and this particular flag was presented at Camp Union, Jan. 10, 1862 to Capt. Orange Newton, then commander of Co. F by ladies of Stockholm, NY. The flag presentation was accompanied by a brass band and a speech of acceptance from Captain Newton thanking the ladies for this extraordinary flag that they had paid $80 to have painted. The 34 stars in canton represent the 34 states at this time. This flag is typical of early war presentation flags all silk with painted canton still retaining its red, white and blue pole ties. Company "F" of the 92nd no doubt carried this flag in the early part of war through the Manassas Campaign and the Peninsula Campaign. It saw its first action in the battle of Williamsburg. Early in 1863 after one year in service they were involved in the battles of Kinston, White Hall and Goldsboro, N.C. In March of '63 the regiment occupied a fort on the Neuse River near Newbern, N.C. and named it Fort Anderson in recognition of their commanding officer. Here they were in command of several large cannon. The fort was attacked by 7,000 Confederates under Confederate General Pettigrew. The 92nd survived the attack and stayed on for another year, losing many men to disease in the southern swamps. Capt. Benjamin H. Webster who's name is inked on hoist, "B.H. Webster Pembina, ND" left service and must have brought flag home during Ft. Anderson campaign. In a document of the Assembly of New York a national flag with the name of regiment "Excelsior Rifle Battalion" was returned by the regiment May 11th, 1864. "The flag was used by the regiment until it was so torn by bullets that it could not be unfurled." This is not the regulation silk flag they speak of, however, that same legend "Excelsior Rifle Battalion" would fit on this ribbon and few letters that remain do fit this name, though, according to the restorer they didn't know where the letters went and they were reversed. Benjamin H. Webster entered the 92nd as an original lieutenant in company "F", he was discharged in January, 1863 as Captain, and must have retained possession of this flag. He later moved from Stockholm NY to Dakota Territory where he later died in Pembina, ND. This no doubt was the flag originally presented January 10th, 1862, to Captain Orange Newton and retained by later Captain Benjamin H Webster. This is the only surviving flag of the 92nd, though newspaper accounts speak of this presentation and the regimental presentation flag which others are unaccounted for. SIZE: Frame is 80" h x 57" w. PROVENANCE: January 10th, 1862 presented by the Ladies of Stockholm to Captain Orange Newton, Company "F", 92nd N.Y. at Camp Union; Captain Benjamin H. Webster, Company "F" 92nd New York, 1862-1863; Purchased in Western flea market, circa 1980, then by current owner in 2015; Conservation University of Denver, Conservation Center, 1987. CONDITION: Red and white stripes are fairly intact, though red has faded to pale pink. Blue canton still retains good color as can be seen in photo's with reductions of about 75% of the painted areas, though they have been backed by the conservator. The red ribbon also is missing its motto. Flag is well conserved and is pressure mounted with backing and plexiglass. Conservation report is available. Conservation was done at the Rocky Mountain Conservation Center at the University of Denver in 1987. Inked inscription on hoist is easily discerned. 50696-1

HIGH GRADE PRESENTATION CIVIL WAR FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD WITH DAMASCUS BLADE AND BATTLE HONORS-35TH NEW JERSEY. A marvelous sword with a lot of history and most it written right on the artifact itself! This is a high-grade U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword of regulation style. Foreign made sword has a slightly curved 31", sgl edged, Damascus steel blade having an etched, engraved and gilded spread winged eagle on one side with a sunburst, and a "U.S." with floral embellishments engraved and gilded on the other. Back of the blade is engraved and gilded as well with a fancy leaf pattern. Regulation cast brass hilt terminates at a heavily cast and decorated pommel cap with scrolls and classical leaf designs. Grip is of silver and engraved with numerous scrolls, a scallop shell design and a stippled background creating two open cartouches. Scabbard is of wood, covered in sharkskin with sheet brass mounts having heavily cast and, in bas relief, fancy brass applications forming three oval cartouches on the top, middle and bottom mounts. Within these cartouches is sterling silver, engraved panels. Top depicts a finely engraved American eagle surmounting the American shield, the middle "Lady Liberty," and drag; the figure of "Justice". Mounted directly to the scabbard within a fancy cast brass "frame" is the presentation plaque, also of sterling silver and engraved thusly: "Presented to/Capt. Charles A. Angel,/Co. A, 35th N.J. Vol’s/by the members of his company, as a token of their esteem". Additionally, engraved on the reverse of the top scabbard mount is engraved: "Fought against the rebellion of 1861,2, & 3, at Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Savage’s Station, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, Bristow’s Station, Bull Run, 2nd, Chantilly, Fredericksburg". CONDITION: Good. Damascus steel grain is easily seen on the blade, although some of the gilt decoration has worn thin. Hilt and grip are fine. Scabbard shows some age but is still quite nice. All markings are clear. Capt. Angel is reported as the "acting Major" in the regimental colonel’s after-action report for the Battle of Resaca. Carte-de-Visite photograph of Captain Angel is available in the New Jersey Department of State archives, Adjutant Generals’ Office (Civil War) Series # SDEA4010. He is also listed as a participant in the Battle of Atlanta; therefore, obviously, his service extended well beyond the battle honors present on this wonderful sword. 4-57391 (8,000-12,000)
