- PETER MAX MIXED MEDIA PAINTING "LIBERTY
PETER MAX MIXED MEDIA PAINTING "LIBERTY HEAD" 2010**First Time At Auction**
Peter Max (American, b. Germany 1937). "Liberty Head 2010 Ver. 1 #24" mixed media with acrylic on paper, 2010. Signed at upper right. An impressive homage to the Statue of Liberty by Peter Max. "Liberty Head" is a mixed media composition with hand-painted acrylic throughout that is also hand-signed by the artist. Delineated in Max's signature bold style with painterly brushstrokes and vibrant color juxtapositions, this piece presents the head of the Statue of Liberty in a myriad of colors against an equally colorful background - all delineated with expressive painterly gestures in a rainbow of hues with the artist's signature at the upper right. Size: 14" L x 14" W (35.6 cm x 35.6 cm)
Interestingly, Peter Max's patriotic theme goes back to the year of America's bicentennial. For the 4th of July in 1976, Max created a special installation as well as an art book entitled "Peter Max Paints America," which included a painting of each of the fifty states to commemorate America’s bicentennial. Six years later, in 1982, Max painted six Lady Liberties on the White House lawn. He also played a role in the statue's restoration, which was completed in 1986. Max has dubbed himself "America’s own most patriotic artist."
About the artist: Born in Berlin, Peter Max moved frequently with his family, living in more than six countries until they settled in the United States. Max studied in New York City at the Art Students League, the Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Art. Max has been revered as a visionary Pop Artist since the 1960's, beloved for his "Cosmic '60s" style which would later evolve to Neo Expressionism. Max developed a bold style of painting using striking Fauvist colors and intriguing themes. As he evolved from Pop to Neo-Expressionism, his work became more painterly and sensuous. Max's unique symbolism and vibrant color palette have continued to inspire new generations of Americans throughout the decades.

Rodrigue 71 lower left 30 x 36 in., frame: 35 x 41 in. 1971, oil on canvas Dimensions: 30 x 36 in., frame: 35 x 41 in. Provenance: George Rodrigue Gallery, Lafayette, Louisiana; acquired from the above September 25, 1979 by a Wellesley, Massachusetts Collector; The Estate of a Wellesley, Massachusetts Collector. George Rodrigue began to paint the Louisiana landscape after being inspired by his home-town view as he drove back and forth from South Louisiana to the Art Center College of Design in California. He took an academic interest in the art history of Louisiana, studying past depictions of the state, but ultimately focused his workon one particularaspect of the land: the enormous old oak trees that filled the vistas of Southern Louisiana. As he progressed from his early empty, moody landscapeshe began to include figures, often focusing on the Cajun heritage of which he was so proud.Miss 4th of July, which is based off of a photograph from Rodrigue's mother's photo album, exploresthis theme of Cajun-American heritage, set against the backdrop of Rodrigue's iconic Louisiana oak. According to Rodrigue's wife Wendy, the artist noted,"even though the Cajuns spoke French, once they reached America they became, over the next one hundred years, truly Americanized. They were in a country with freedom of religion and freedom of speech, neither of which they experienced as the British moved into Nova Scotia. In America they became liberated, and they started to appreciate the concept that they were Americans. The 4th of July became a big event in their lives because it was an expression of the flag and nationalism." Condition: overall good condition.
