MADELINE WYNDHAM (1845–1920) (ATTRIBUTED MAKER)
THE 'SOULS' SPORTING MEDAL, 1902 enamel on copper, inscribed to front C/ EVAN, and inscribed verso CLOUDS/ EASTER 1902/ GOLF COMPETITION/ A.J. BALFOUR./ ELCHO. P.S.W./ O.LODGE.EGO/ EVAN, within the original silk-lined leather box6.5cm diameterLiterature: Dakers C. Clouds: Biography of a Country House,Yale University Press, 1993, pp. 143-152Note: The Souls, or 'The Gang' as they chose to call themselves before the name 'Souls' was coined in 1888 by Lord Charles Beresford, was initially made up of four aristocratic families; the Balfours, Lyttletons, Tennents and Wyndhams. Arthur Balfour was the leading light of the Souls, and as a set they rejected being grouped with other social cliques of the time such as The Marlborough House crowd, preferring rounds of golf and literary discussions to bridge and hunting. One of these sporting weekends was held at Clouds, the home of Percy and Madeline Wyndham, at Easter in 1902 and is the subject of the current lot. Percy Wyndham bought the Clouds estate in 1876, and he and Madeline set about demolishing the existing late eighteenth-century house and building a new one, designed by Philip Webb between 1881 and 1885 and decorated by Morris & Co. Madeline Wyndham was an artist in enamels, embroidery and watercolours, however from the mid-1890s she concentrated on enamelling. Madeline was closely associated with the enamellist Alexander Fisher and became one of his most talented pupils; she also used her influence to further his career. It was an expensive hobby and appealed more to aristocratic women, some of whom installed furnaces in their homes. Indeed, Fisher procured a furnace for Madeline from a Parisian firm and had it installed at Clouds in 1901, where this medal was probably fired. The participants in the Golf Competition at Easter 1902 are inscribed verso on the current lot - they are 'A.J. Balfour' (later to be Prime Minister); 'Elcho' (Lord Hugo Elcho,11th Earl of Wemyss & March); P.S.W. (Percy Wyndham); 'O. Lodge' (Sir Oliver Lodge); 'Ego' (Lord Hugo Elcho) and 'Evan' (EvanCharteris, presumably the winner).

VULCANITE 1902 KING EDWARD VII MATCH SAFE VESTA CASE: Original black vulcanite vesta matchsafe, book shaped and opening both ends with a very detailed profile of King Edward VII in an oval portrait with a crown above, made c. 1902 to commemorate his coronation. The coronation of Edward VII and his wife Alexandra as King and Queen of the United Kingdom and the British Empire took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on 9th August 1902. PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston SC Estate. The invention of the useful but somewhat hazardous strike anywhere match in the 1830s necessitated the need for vesta cases. As part of the essential dress code of the Victorian and Edwardian era they were, like the snuffbox or the propelling pencil, were made in a whole range of materials and forms from the purely functional to the deluxe and the novel. Many of the novelty figural vesta cases come from the 1880s, when smoking became fashionable. By 1920 with the invention of the petrol lighter, these faded from popular fashion. VCC Dated 1902 London-to-Brighton Run eligible 1902 Autocar Type VIII Rear-Entrance Tonneau Chassis no. 776 Engine no. 762 Better remembered today as a manufacturer of trucks Autocar began its career with passenger cars. Manufacture of tricycles and quadricycles began in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in 1897 under the auspices of the Pittsburgh Motor Vehicle Company. In April 1900 the company moved to nearby Ardmore and was reorganized as the Autocar Company. Perhaps 150 cars were built by the end of 1901 and in 1902 a shaft-drive car was introduced believed to be the first multi-cylinder American car so equipped. From the beginning Autocar espoused left-hand drive tillers at first but wheel steering by 1904 setting it apart from most cars of the day. From 1907 however production of trucks had proved very successful and so the automobile line was discontinued almost as soon as the 1912 models were announced. This car is an older restoration of an interesting and historic automobile. Owned by Ohio collector John Baird it was sold to fellow Buckeye State collector James Conant in 1978. It had been restored prior to Conant's acquisition but was missing the rear tonneau section. Using the Autocar in the Frederick C. Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum in Cleveland as a pattern a new tonneau was expertly crafted and fitted to the car . The body and fenders are of wood construction and the modestly plain leather interior is typical of light cars of its era. Period Dietz oil sidelamps and a correct-type taillamp complete the car's lighting equipment. It has received AACA National First Place recognition for its excellent and authentic restoration. In the early seventies it was dated as 1902 by the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain and has completed the famed London to Brighton Run on numerous occasions. The current owner purchased the car in 2006. It has been used regularly most recently in California tours in the Bakersfield area and participated in the Pasadena Holiday Motor Excursion. The car runs well and is enjoyable to drive although somewhat counterintuitive since the only foot controls are two brakes. Spark and throttle controls clutch gear changing and steering are all accomplished by hand and keep the driver very busy. The car is accompanied by extensive documentation of the restoration construction of the tonneau and research on its history. A turn-key Brighton Run car it is eligible for one- and two-cylinder tours a host of horseless carriage events and could carry its new owner to a punctual arrival at Brighton. Offered on a certificate of title.

Guy Lowell AMERICAN GARDENS 1902 First Edition Antique Landscape Gardening Architectural Plans Photographic Plates Title: American GardensAuthor: uncredited authorEditor: Guy Lowell - Guy Lowell was an American architect and landscape architect.Born in Boston, Lowell was the son of Mary Walcott (Goodrich) and Edward Jackson Lowell, and a member of Boston's well-known Lowell family. He graduated from Noble's Classical School (later Noble and Greenough School) in 1888 and from Harvard College in 1892, and received his degree in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1894. He then studied landscape and horticulture at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and architectural history and landscape architecture in the atelier of Jean-Louis Pascal at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, with diplome in 1899. In the middle of these studies he married Henrietta Sargent, the daughter of the director of Harvard's Arnold Arboretum, Charles S. Sargent of Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 17, 1898.Returning to the United States, Lowell opened his own practice in Boston in 1899 and was successful immediately. By 1906, he had opened a branch office in New York and later split each week between New York and Boston. His commissions included large public, academic, and commercial buildings, as well as many distinctive residences, country estates, and formal gardens. He was the architect and landscape architect for the first Charles River dam, completed in 1910, which transformed the tidal river into the Charles River Basin. He designed five structures on the dam: the Upper and Lower Lock Gate Houses, the Stable, the Boat House, and an open pavilion. As part of the dam's construction, Frederick Law Olmsted's Charlesbank was extended from Charles Circle to the Harvard Bridge, and Lowell was responsible for the landscape design of the Boston Embankment, now universally known as the Esplanade. Lowell is perhaps most recognized for his design of two public buildings: the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (1906–09 and later additions) and the New York State Supreme Court building in New York City (1912–1914 and 1919–1927). Some of his other commissions included Lowell Lecture Hall at Harvard and academic buildings at Phillips Academy Andover, Simmons College, and Brown University.Guy's work on Harvard University's President's House was commissioned by his cousin, Abbott Lawrence Lowell, during his tenure as Harvard President (1909–1933). The house remained the residence of succeeding presidents until 1971, when Derek Bok (1971–1991) moved his young family to the bucolic grounds of the Elmwood colonial mansion. Interestingly, Elmwood was the lifelong home of another of Guy's ancestors, the celebrated American writer, poet, and foreign diplomat James Russell Lowell (1819–1891). As Percival Lowell's third cousin, Guy became the sole trustee of the Lowell Observatory after his cousin's death in 1916.Lowell also made a name for himself as a landscape architect. His obituary in The New York Times notes that he designed or "fitted up" gardens for the elder J. Pierpont Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, and the Piping Rock Club. Additional garden-related projects included those of T. Jefferson Coolidge, Mrs. Oscar Lasigi in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and Payne Whitney in Manhasett on Long Island. Lowell designed many of the gardens and grounds for his numerous residential commissions as an architect, but the most significant project appears to have been the grounds of Harbor Hill (1905); the estate may have been Lowell's largest landscape architecture commission. It is in the area of education that Lowell left his lasting mark on the profession of landscape architecture. He founded the short-lived, but influential, landscape architecture program at MIT (1900–1910). Under his guidance, the program developed as a synthesis of French planning ideals and Italian garden design, with a significant emphasis on horticulture and engineering. The first students graduated from the program in 1902. It was an undergraduate option from 1900 until 1904, and it continued as a graduate course until 1909, with Lowell's offering instruction in landscape architecture until 1912. (He donated his services, asking that his salary be turned over to the Architecture Department.) He taught an important group of landscape architects their trade including Mabel Keyes Babcock (1862–1931), George Elberton Burnap (1885–1938), Marian Cruger Coffin (1876–1957), Martha Brookes Hutcheson (1871–1959), and Rose Standish Nichols.[2] Lowell's program at MIT provided educational opportunities in landscape architecture for women that they could not find elsewhere; many of his female students went on to become outstanding practitioners.Lowell also published several books, including: "American Gardens" (1902), "Smaller Italian Villas and Farmhouses" (1916), and "More Small Italian Villas and Farmhouses" (1920). He also contributed to American Gardens, a photographic magazine.Lowell died suddenly in the Madeira Islands on February 4, 1870.
