VICTOR VASARELY, FRANCE / HUNGARY (1906-1997), PICTOR, 1981, OP ART SERIGRAPH, 24"H X 24"W (IMAGE), 35"H X 35"W (FRAME)Victor Vasarely, France / Hungary, (1906-1997) Pictor, 1981, Op Art serigraph signed and numbered 102/250 lower margin From AskArt: Victor Vasarely was born in Hungary in 1906, as Gyözö Vásárhelyi. He moved to Paris in 1930, where he worked successfully as a commercial graphic artist. All the while, he was researching the optical and emotional opportunities of several different graphical methods. He came to the result that geometrical means can create sensual perceptions that convey new ideas about space, matter and energy. He created an independent geometric abstraction whose variations lead to image patterns with kinetic effects. The artist arranged a wattle of geometric forms in bright colors so that the eye perceives it as a fluctuating movement. Vasarely had a huge influence on the Op art, and is sometimes even named as one of its founders. He participated regularly in the documenta between 1955 and 1968, and designed the official logo for the XX. Olympics in Munich. The Vasarely Museum, established in 1976, can be found in his city of birth, Pécs. A second one, opened in 1987, is located in the castle Zichy in Budapest. Victor Vasarely died in 1997, in Paris. Op Art serigraph Dimensions: 24"H x 24"W (image), 35"H x 35"W (frame)

Laid into the above.Joseph Y. Jeanes was among the best turn of the 20th-century Philadelphia collectors. Assembling an impressive library, which included original Audubon drawings (now located at Harvard), Jeanes was a notable member of the Library Company among other Philadelphia-area institutions. It appears that he collected these images over a long period, with internal evidence suggesting some to have come from historian Joseph Jackson and antiquary Ferdinand J. Dreer. Among the photographers represented are John Moran, the brother of the noted western artist. Moran, whose images display remarkable quality and composition, is considered among the most artistic photographers of the post-Civil War period. In 1875, he wrote of photography: “Art in all its forms is the form of thought, and the photographic work which rises to this plane is the expression of the ideas of the photographer. Nature in some sort becomes plastic to his touch, and he moulds her to his judgement; this, however, he does by selection rather than construction; this happy selection comes from the power to see the beautiful, and results from a highly trained taste” (“Thoughts on Art, Nature and Photography” in The Philadelphia Photographer, June 1875).While institutional holdings of these or similar images are substantial, most notably by the Library Company and the Free Library of Philadelphia, those collections were largely assembled at the same time that this album was compiled by Jeanes. Similar albums, or even individual images from this period, seldom come to market.

Our research indicates only 6 complete collections of 177 volumes of the Kamer-furyerskiy zhurnal, namely at the The Russian State Library (Moscow), RGIA (Russian State Historical Archive, Laboratory of Microfilming and Document Restoration, Moscow), the State Historic Public Library of Russia (St. Petersburg), the library of the Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg), the New York Public Library (New York), and the library of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Madison). To our knowledge, this is the first set to ever appear at auction. . These Kammerfurier Ceremonial Journals, so named after the Kammerfuriers, or Collegiate Councillors (civil rank of the 6th class, according to the Table of Ranks), who recorded the everyday chronicles, reflect over 200 years of life at the Russian Imperial Court: descriptions of balls, banquets, weddings, performances, coronations, and military operations. Begun in 1695 as Peter the Great`s diaries of his Azov military campaigns, the journals conclude with Nicholas the II`s abdication, and provide a unique insight into the covert affairs and lavish celebrations at the Russian court. The journals, reprinted from original manuscripts at the Moscow Main Archive of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, were often sent out to members of the imperial family and gifted to confidants. This particular set, for one, includes several volumes, bound in full leather and monogrammed SA in gilt embossing, from the collection of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia (Russian 1857-1905); as well as eight volumes bearing the ex-libris of Georgy Aleksandrovich Bobrinsky (Russian 1862-1928), a military and government figure and a descendant of Catherine the Great. . PROVENANCE. Several volumes embossed on spine with the monogram of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia (Russian 1857-1905). Eight volumes bear ex-libris / inventory labels of Georgy Aleksandrovich Bobrinsky (Russian 1862-1928). Some volumes marked with labels of the V. I. Klyuchkov bookstore, Saint-Petersburg.
