- DAY CALENDAR OF AN OFFICER ON THE USS
DAY CALENDAR OF AN OFFICER ON THE USS CALIFORNIA AT THE PEAL HARBOR ATTACK 6 ?" x 8 ¾" The USS California, a Tenenessee-class battleship. is not that well known as other vessels attacked one December 7, 1941; but due to her crew, the ship was able two shoot down two enemy planes while on fire. Four crew members would receive the Medal Of Honor. The ship was struck by two torpedoes early in the fight, causing the ship to take on water. A bomb penetrated the forward deck, extending damage to the second deck and spreading fire. The water around the battleship was filled with burning fuel oil. Many abandoned ship into a sea of flames. Commander J.D. Jewell, the owner of this calendar, was the ship's service officer. His prime duty was crew safety. In spite of receiving burns on his face and arms, he coordinated the removal of the injured, as well as administering first aid. He survived the attack. On the last page of the calendar, with his orders stamp, it reads; "J.D.Jewell, Commander (MC), U.S. Navy, ship's service officer". The commander stopped ripping out the days on Wednesday 2 , July. From Thursday 3, July on, all pages are intact, including the day calendar notes for December 7, 1941. The clock is in running condition. A unique piece of military history, linked to a survivor in the thick of the action, on "The Day of Infamy".
