- A Patriotic Porcelain Shaving Mug Depicting
A Patriotic Porcelain Shaving Mug Depicting the U.S.S. Mississippi
Early 20th Century
bearing the name M. Fogelson and U.S.S. Mississippi in gilt lettering, and depicting the lead naval battleship in the Mississippi class between two American flags.underside marked Bavaria and signed C.P. Haim.Height 3 3/4 inches.
The Mississippi was built by the United States Navy between 1904 and 1908. She served with the Atlantic Fleet from 1909 to 1912, when she was placed on reserve. In 1914, the Mississippi was reactivated as an aviation support ship during the occupation of Veracruz, Mexico. She was purchased shortly thereafter by Greece in July 1914 and renamed Kilkis, becoming the flagship of the Greek fleet amidst the country's naval arms race with the Ottoman Empire.
U.S. Army Transfer Service Documents recording the arrivals and departures of enlisted men between 1910 and 1939 indicate that M. Fogelson may refer to Michel Fogelson (1892-1963), or possibly his brother Mair Fogelson, both Russian or Polish immigrants who came to the United States in the early twentieth century and served in the Navy during World War I. According to Military Naturalization Petitions, Fogelson took the Oath of Allegiance on June 28, 1918, in Washington, DC, and was aboard the President Grant with Co. L, 50th Infantry by 1919. Military records connect him to the Grant, the Princess Matoika, and the Cantigny, but unfortunately, any connections to the Mississippi remain unfounded.

- MEXICAN NEGRITO CARVED WOOD DANCE MASKOffered
MEXICAN NEGRITO CARVED WOOD DANCE MASKOffered in this lot is a Mexican Negrito Carved Wood Dance Mask, circa early-Mid 20th C. Provenance: Private collection, Big Sky, Montana. Masks in Mexico are used in a wide variety of dance, ceremony, festivals and theatre, with their wearing not separate from the event in which they are used. The most common uses are with traditional dances, which are a form of theater, with characters, storyline and music, but the performers are not professionals. The use of masks and costumes was an important part of Mesoamerican cultures for long before the arrival of the Spanish. A number of dances in several parts of Mexico include or feature masks imitating African or black faces. These have their origins with the importation of African slaves by the Spanish. These slaves had contact with the indigenous peoples, often as intermediaries between them and the Spanish overlords. This experience was incorporated in indigenous dances, with the dancers called “negritos” (little black ones). Negrito masks vary by region. Those from the Costa Chica region of Oaxaca and Guerrero have realistic or exaggerated features, and other from the Sierra de Juarez of Oaxaca are more primitive with small tusks protruding from the mouth. Those from Michoacán have fine features and a gentle expression. In the colonial period, blacks had a wide range of occupations so this was portrayed in dances. Although most of the Africans intermarried with the rest of the population, the masks remain. Hand-carved, hand-painted polychromed natural hardwood sculpture. Overall condition is good, remains of old paint observed underneath. Measures 14"L x 7.75"W x 4.25"D
- DON BALKE (B. 1933) "ROCKY MOUNTAIN
DON BALKE (B. 1933) "ROCKY MOUNTAIN ELK"Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Rocky Mountain Elk" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Paper.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for the Baby Wildlife of the 50 States, postmarked January 4, 1984. A gentle mountain stream trickles through an alpine meadow fragrant with the perfume of spring flowers. Winter's cold has passed and the green of summer awakens from its deep sleep. Nature renews herself in the spring when tender seedlings sprout through last autumn's fallen leaves and pastures turn lush and green. The wilderness areas of Utah are enriched with the fresh, new life of spring and especially with the arrival of the wildlife babies. One of the most beautiful wildlife infants that roams the meadows of Utah is the Rocky Mountain Elk. Born in the early spring, the Elk calf is dappled with snowy spots to camouflage the baby in shadowy thickets where it often hides. The young elk follows its mother closely for the first months of its life for it is solely dependent upon her for food and protection. When the calf reaches four months of age, its dappled baby fur is gone, and the youngster is weaned. Young elk spend their first summer in Utah's high mountain ranges. But when the winter snows start to fall, the herds begin their annual descent from the mountainous summer homes to winter ranges in the valleys and live quietly in small matriarchal groups. After their first birthdays, yearling bulls begin to grow their first pair of antlers. By autumn the antlers reach full growth and the yearling elk join the herd as adults.

- ZAPOTEC MONTE ALBAN IV POTTERY DOUBLE
ZAPOTEC MONTE ALBAN IV POTTERY DOUBLE INCENSARIOPre-Columbian, Oaxaca, Mexico, Zapotec culture, Monte Alban IV, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A mold-made ceramic double incensario, in the form of a seated lord, with two cylindrical vessels emerging from his hollow and undecorated back. The lord is shown with legs crossed, wearing a headdress that is almost sphinx like, with a hand draped gruesomely down over the front of it. He also wears large spooled earrings, a huge, multi-layered pectoral, and a draped skirt that hangs from his waist over his legs. Size: 4.45" L x 5.1" W x 5.55" H (11.3 cm x 13 cm x 14.1 cm)
Monte Alban, a city inhabited for over a thousand years before abandonment centuries before the arrival of the Spanish, was a regional power that dominated much of the modern day state of Oaxaca and interacted with other city states in Mesoamerica, like Teotihuacan to its north. Many cultures at this time were producing ceremonial incensarios (censers), but Monte Alban's in particular were often so anthropomorphized that from the front they are difficult to tell from sculpture. This is in strong contrast to incensarios at Teotihuacan, which were highly abstract. Figural censers have been excavated from Monte Alban's high status tombs, where it seems they were placed to leave offerings for the dead.
Monte Alban incensarios are highly valued. See a larger one from Sotheby's Sale 8552, lot 129 with estimate of $50,000 to $70,000.
