17th century British needlework, two figures, soldier with tents in background, woman in court dress in front of buildings, oval panel surrounded by stylized flowers, insects and birds above lion and leopard, silk on silk ground, British, late 17th century, 17 x 21 in. (sight); wood frame. Extensive fading and browning to silk, approximately 1-1/2 x 6 in. area with losses of silk ground and some shattering, losses to embroidered elements, possible pest damage; frame with losses and chips.

Wide and finely wrought floral and palmette border. Central panel with three alphabets above weeping willows and an urn that flank verses that recall the ups and downs of life. Genealogical note affixed verso states Mary W. Lyon was born in 1812 and died in 1904. Dimensions: 17.25" x 17" sight. Framed 20.25" x 19.75".
