TSUCHIYA KOITSU (JAPAN, 1870-1949) UNFRAMED "Natsu no stuki Miyajima, Showa juichinen, hachigatsu saku" (Summer moon in Miyajima, August 1936). A wing of the Utsuyajima temple at the lake under a full moon. Signed with seal. Shinhanga, oban. Unframed, loose. 11 1/2" x 17". Near fine with minor ink transfer to the right hand deckled edge of the sheet, well away from the image.

Taiso Yoshitoshi (Japanese 1839-1892) "The Village of the Shi Clan on a Moonlit Night (Shikason Tsukiyo)". Woodblock print in colors with gauffrage from "100 Aspects of the Moon" trimmed and conjoined with text page written by the collector in 1885 apprx. 13" x 17-1/2" sight size matted and framed in a round corner silver tone frame under plexi overall apprx. 23-1/2" x 27-1/2". Label verso from The Mitzie Verne Collection Inc. "Shi Shin (in Chinese Shih Chin) is one of the 108 bandit heroes of the famous Chinese novel "Suikoden" (translated by Pearl Buck under the title "All Men are Brothers". His nickname was "the Nine dragoned" because he was tattooed with an elaborate design of nine dragons. He began life as the son of a wealthy landowner in the village named after his family. Here he is shown relaxing on a summer evening before he began his career as a bandit."
