- FOLK ART FOX CANECa. 1880-The fox is
FOLK ART FOX CANECa. 1880-The fox is naturalistically rendered with joined paws atop of a tree stump and shows all its characterizing features including the triangular face with pointed snout, upright wedge-shaped ears and long and bushy tail. A pair of inset glass eyes stresses the spirit of the fox and its cunning abilities and lend it a great deal of agility and intelligence. The fruitwood handle comes with a dark wood collar turned with multiple rings, an oak branch shaft freed from its bark and a long horn ferrule. Way out of the ordinary in size and execution, this vernacular cane galvanizes all the elements of quality including a superb and natural patina. We have good reasons to believe that this cane draws direct inspiration from the illustrations of Goethe’s fable “Reineke Fuchs”, “Reynard the Fox” by Wilhelm von Kaulbach, whose drawings inspired a whole generation of artists including ivory carvers who adapted these to chess sets and cane handles. H. 4 ½” x 3 ¼”, O.L. 33 ½” The fox is often associated with the figure of the trickster, but as a spirit animal, it can also turn into a teacher providing guidance on swiftly finding your way around obstacles. If you follow the fox totem wisdom, you may be called to use or develop quick thinking and adaptability. Responsive, sometimes cunning, this power animal is a great guide when you are facing tricky situations.
