PIED PIPER D6403 - LARGE - ROYAL DOULTON CHARACTER JUGPied Piper D6403 (green cap; maroon and yellow tunic; brown hair). Designed by Geoff Blower, issued 1954- 1981. Size: 7"H (Large)In German legend, a stranger came to the town of Hamelin and told the mayor he would rid the village of rats for a sum of money. The Pied Piper walked through town playing a flute, and the rats followed him to the Weser River, where they drowned. When the mayor refused to pay him, the Pied Piper played his flute again, and this time the village children followed him into a cave, never to be seen again.

A rare Art Deco figurine modeled by artist Leslie Harradine as the Pied Piper of Hamelin, decorated in an usual lustre of yellow, red, green, brown and black. The Pied Piper legend dates to the Middle Ages, the earliest references describing a rat-catcher dressed in multicolored ("pied") clothing who was a hired by the town to lure rats away with his magic pipe.
