CHARLES DICKENS TWICE SIGNED LETTER, 1839 Charles Dickens letter, 4 pages total. Two of which have writing and contain 2 different signatures of Dickens, one a full signature with flourish and the other a more personal C.D. The letter is inscribed to Mr. Hicks (Charles Hicks, 1799-1870), the foreman-printer for Bradbury and Evans. Letter discusses a project they are engaged in of which Mr. Hicks was known to have saved many of the original manuscripts of the Pickwick Papers which Dickens wrote and submitted to Bradbury and Evans who were printing for Chapman and Hall in London at that time. This letter references the first chapter containing 10 pages and his visiting the printer to examine the proofs. The letter is marked as being sent from their rented home located in Petersham, England which the Dickens family occupied from May to August in 1839. At the time, Dickens was finishing Nicholas Nickleby.

This is the tall edition with the additional plates by Buss. First edition. Rebound in contemporary brown leather with faux gilded ribs, and the title and author's name. Matches many first edition error points found in Smith (19-27). 609 pp. 4to.
