HAUSSMANN and stamped SORMANI PARIS to the underside. height 29in (74cm); width 23in (58cm); depth 16in (40.5cm) Condition: Good condition overall. With typical even fading, marks, scratches and light wear. Mounts very nicely cast. Pieces well constructed. Some even darkening and rubbing to mounts. Some lifting to marquetry to top. Tambour doors work well. One pull to one slightly compressed. One drawer lined with paper. Spotting to back of one. More notable darkening to sabots. Two keys.

Sormani, Paris/ 10, r Charlot height 67in (170cm); width 32in (81cm); depth 14in (36cm)Provenance: Property from a Private Collection, Malibu, California.Other Notes: Paul Sormani (1817 to 1877), was born in Venice where he trained as a cabinet maker. In 1847, he moved to Paris to open his first atelier specializing in fine quality French Kings style pieces. Sormani exhibited at the International Exhibitions in Paris in 1849, 1855, 1867, 1878 and 1900, and in London in 1862, winning numerous medals. Renowned as a maker of luxury furniture, he received commissions from the likes of Empress Eugenie, the wife of Emperor Napoleon III. When Paul Sormani died in 1877, his wife, Marie-Philippine, and his son, Paul-Charles, took over the business; from this date onwards, the firm's pieces were signed "Veuve Sormani & Fils." The firm closed in 1934. Condition: Structurally sound. With an even medium red/brown color to timber. Mounts of good quality and even color and tone. Glass panels beveled. Interior with two glass shelves. Drawer lock stamped as stated. General marks, scratches, a few scattered nicked losses, rubbing and wear overall. Some spotting and darkening to some mounts. Veneer to base backboard and undertier cracking and lifting somewhat. One key.

In the manner of Francois Linke and Paul Sormani, after a similar model by Jean-Francois Oeben. The marquetry top with its original, bronze-mounted glass tray; the cabinet with convex and bombe sides that open to an interior with brass marquetry, raised on cabriole legs, with fine ormolu handles and mounts. 32 x 31 x 20 in. (81.3 x 78.7 x 50.8 cm.) Condition: One side door with loose catch.
