20TH C. BILL FREEMAN PAINTING - MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPEWilliam Joseph "Bill" Freeman (American, 1927-2012). Oil on canvas, ca. mid 20th century CE. A picturesque landscape painting by American artist Bill Freeman. Freeman presents us with an awe-inspiring view of a sunlit mountain range from the autumnal landscape below, with golden trees along the horizon line. The sun radiates natural light over the mountains which glisten in hues of pink and lavender, while dramatic shadows strike the peaks closest to the viewer, providing rich contrasts. Freeman's painting possesses an almost ethereal quality thanks to the dreamy color palette as well as his signature style that demonstrates influences of Impressionism and Expressionism achieved via a sophisticated use of palette knife and brush. Size: 21.875" L x 27.875" W (55.6 cm x 70.8 cm)
Bill Freeman grew up in West Texas on a farm just outside of El Paso. Interestingly, he worked as a horse wrangler, fought forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service, and was a field researcher and guide for the Arizona Game and Fish Department for twelve years in Arizona, Wyoming, and New Mexico prior to becoming an artist. It was not until the age of 30 that Freeman decided to become an artist specializing in Western landscapes. Today he is considered a pioneer of Western art centered on such storied locales as Scottsdale, Arizona as well as Jackson Hole and Grand Tetons National Park, Wyoming.
Although this painting is not signed, a document from a representative of the William J. Freeman Estate confirming that it was painted by Bill Freeman can be provided upon request.

Elusive fragmented and mysterious the stories told are few on detail and rich in emotion. Wong frequently created three versions of a piece. An oil pastel like this offering served as a study for a larger oil painting which he then often transformed into a three dimensional?sculpture. 20th C. Hopi Wood Clown Kachina, Attr. Jimmy Koots: Attributed to Jimmy Koots also known as James Kootshongsie (Native American, Hopi Pueblo, 1916 to 1996) ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A fascinating kachina doll made from wood, with the characteristic stripes to represent a koshare (payakyamu) clown. The standing figure holds a baby koshare in his hands that is swaddled in a red and white checkered pattern. The baby has an identical smile and horned cap that the adult koshare wears. The larger koshare has a bulbous nose and a mischievous smile. The iconic horned headdress is decorated with cotton threads and corn husks on the tips of both. This kachina is a sacred jester or trickster spirit, and dancers dressed as koshare will often parody and mock the audience to both invoke laughter and ridicule. While humorous, the performances are meant as serious social commentaries. Size: 3" L x 2" W x 11" H (7. 6 cm x 5. 1 cm x 27. 9 cm). . James Kootshongsie, better known as Jimmy Koots, is a famous Hopi carver, accredited with reviving the Kachina carving tradition. Koots was taken from Hotevilla Arizona at a young age and placed in a government run school. He spent five years in a climate hostile to Hopi beliefs and heritage. Once he returned to his hometown, he was once again whisked away into WWII. Returning to Arizona, he became an activist in the fight to keep oil and gas companies from strip mining the Hopi ancestral land. His carvings revived the traditional styles of Hopi Kachinas. Most of his carvings are unsigned but are distinctive and indicative of Koots’ style. . . The Katsinam, supernatural beings who live in the high mountains of the San Francisco Peaks above traditional Hopi territory, speak to the Hopi through costumed dance and song. These dancers emerge from the round ceremonial kivas that are at the center of their communities, singly or in groups, and dance to the music of drums, rattles, and song. Katsina figures (katsina dolls, katsin-tihu), are made of cottonwood root to represent these supernatural beings. Cottonwood is culturally symbolic because the cottonwood tree, once abundant in traditional Hopi lands, grows where water flows - thus, looking across a landscape, lines of cottonwood trees denote a water source in the desert. After carving, the figures are painted all over with whitewash, made from kaolin clay, and then painted with other colors. . . Provenance: ex-William and Jane Frazer, Aspen, Colorado, USA, acquired 1980s. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. Draper showed at Knoedler, the Graham Gallery, Portraits, Inc. , the Far Gallery, The Findlay Galleries (New York, NY) and the Robert C. Vose Galleries (Boston, MA). More on the artist's background: William Franklin Draper was born in Hopedale, Massachusetts on December 24, 1912. A child prodigy, he studied classical piano at Harvard University. He later changed his focus to fine art and studied with Charles Webster Hawthorne and Henry Hensche in Provincetown, Rhode Island. Draper also attended the National Academy of Design in New York and the Cape Cod School of Art in Massachusetts. Then he traveled to Spain and studied with Harry Zimmerman, moved on to France and attended the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. In 1937, he moved to Boston to study sculpture with George Demetrius and also studied with Jon Corbino in beautiful Rockport, Massachusetts. In 1942, Draper joined the Navy and served as a combat artist when stationed on the Aleutian Islands and in the South Pacific. He observed and painted battle scenes on Bougainville, Guam, Saipan, and other locations, as well as genre scenes of soldiers who were not engaged in combat but rather at work and at play. National Geographic magazine reproduced 25 of his war images in four issues in 1944. In 1945, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D. C. organized a group exhibition of works by five official war artists, including Draper. That same year the Metropolitan Museum of Art included Draper in an exhibition entitled, ''The War Against Japan. '' Draper was also featured in a PBS television show about combat artists entitled, "They Drew Fire" in May of 2000. After the war, Draper opened a studio on Park Avenue in New York City and continued to not only paint, but also play classical and jazz piano. . . Provenance: The William F. MA, LIU MING (Hubei 1969) Baby No.22. Oil on canvas. signed. 200 x 150 cm. Ma Liuming's art and his attempt at using "Planism" in painting As one of the earliest contemporary Chinese performance artists, Ma Liuming used to express his feelings and ideas through his own performance before. In 1988, Ma Liuming cooperated with Wei Guangqing and they gave a performance named "Plan of Suicide" in Wuhan. In the performance, he tightly bound himself with a long piece of cloth and the performance hazily revealed individual's frustration and desperation to the political bondage during that era. In 1993, Ma Liuming was one of the early members of the East Village Artistic Area, and from then he entered his active stage of creation. He changed his active performance art with the feature of objective narration and active expression in his early period to the abstract performance art with the feature of virtual objection. "Fen·Ma Liuming" becomes a dissimilated and virtual artwork, which is a perfect interpretation of contemporary Chinese art of body language, including the performance "The Lunch of Fen·Ma Liuming" and "Fen·Ma Liuming in Geneva". While Ma Liuming was engaged in performance art, he also concentrated constantly on his painting. The works in his early and middle stage are the continuity of the narration through his performance art, such as a man with a head of a woman and a baby with a face of "Fen·Ma Liuming". "Fen·Ma Liuming" does no more exit only in performance art, and it has become the synonym of Ma Liuming's abstract language, a language of a virtual and dissimilated beauty, and a review of the reality in the world. In recent years, some development happens in Ma Liuming's art . "Since the birth of my kid, I had a renewed identification of painting," Ma Liuming says, "When the kid opens his eyes and observe the world for the first time, in my opinion, the impression he gets is obacure, and his vision should be approximately a line." His statement brings us back to the theory about how to recognize the formation of objects in the space with the most basic and primitive vision. At the beginning of 20th century, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque established Cubism which identifies the new relationship between the formation and space - using a "flat" image to present all the planes of that object we can see in real space. Though it is only abstractly geometric, it primitively paints the real formation of the object. It is different from the point of view by which we recognize an object through the three-dimensional vision, nevertheless, it interprets an object through the two-dimensional vision . About Ma Liuming's painting that the image is almost a line is totally not the simple distortion of objects like that in a distorting mirror. If we observe the image from the upper or lower side angles, we will be surprised that the real formation of the object recurs on the painting. It is almost to interprets an object in the most basic and primitive one-dimensional space, a line. Refer to the "Cubism", we may likely call this creative painting technique, which is formed on the base of Cubism, 'Planism`. This creative means of expression may become a new subject of the contemporary art. William y. Wu

SIGNED 20TH C. LYNN ROWAN MYERS PAINTING - ORANGE PEARS...Lynn Rowan Myers (American, 1933-2008). "Orange Pears" oil on canvas, 20th century. Signed by the artist on the lower left. A striking still life painting by Lynn Rowan Myers, an American artist who was an impressive colorist and was influenced by her native California's plein air artists, the French Fauvist painters, and the brilliant landscape of the Southwest. "Orange Pears" captures the tenets of Fauvism by employing bold coloration rather than realistic values. Instead, these luscious pears are embellished with the warm hues of the Southwest that Myers adored. Myers once declared, "The New Mexico landscape is constantly changing and has intense colors and hypnotic shapes. Nothing else has the same kick!" A vibrant painting set in an attractive black frame. SIGNED BILL FREEMAN PAINTING - "FALL ALONG THE VERDE"William Joseph "Bill" Freeman (American, 1927-2012). Oil on canvas, ca. mid 20th century CE. Signed on the lower right. A stunning landscape painting of the red rock cliffs overlooking the flowing waters of the Verde River, bordered by grand canopies of cottonwood and sycamore trees with their golden autumnal foliage - all beneath the brilliant skies of Arizona's Verde Canyon. Freeman is known for his gorgeous color palette, and this painting does not disappoint with azure, aqua, sage, lavender, rose, buttercup, and warm orange hues. In addition, his sophisticated use of brush and palette knife truly brings this scene to life. Size: 22" L x 28" W (55.9 cm x 71.1 cm)
Today he is considered a pioneer of Western art centered on such storied locales as Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

20TH C. RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT GEORGE W/ SWORD & BOWEastern Europe, Russia, ca. early 20th century CE. An impressive icon of Saint George of Lydda seated on a throne, expertly painted with egg tempera and gesso on wood. The youthful saint gazes outwards from deep-set eyes as he sits upon a lavish throne, wearing elaborate armor and a lengthy crimson cape. Adorned in hues of blue, green, yellow, black, beige, peach, and brown, he holds a sword in his right hand, while his left arm carries a bow. Remains of Cyrillic text are seen near the top of the image, serving to identify the noble figure. Size: 9.6" W x 12.9" H (24.4 cm x 32.8 cm)
Saint George was born in Lydda, Palestine during the 3rd century. He became an officer in the Roman army in guard for Emperor Diocletian, demonstrating impressive skill in battle and receiving high honor for his courage. When he learned that Diocletian was preparing to persecute Christians, George presented himself publicly before the emperor and denounced him. The legend of "Saint George and the Dragon," which originated in the 12th century, has immortalized the saint. However, this anecdote is rarely presented in iconography. According to tradition, St. George came to Silene in the province of Libya, where a ravaging dragon demanded daily sacrifice. Fate chose the king's daughter, Elisaba, but George subdued the beast. He told the princess to fasten her sash about the dragon's neck so it could be led through the town for conversion of the people before it was killed.
This icon most likely was kept in someone's home. According to Jeanne Marie Warzeski, scholar and curator of the North Carolina Museum of History's "Windows into Heaven" exhibition, "In the early Byzantine Empire, the home became the primary base for the development of icon veneration. Throughout the ensuing centuries, icons continued to receive honor in homes and churches. To this day, many Orthodox Christians create for prayer and meditation in their home a krasny ugol, or 'beautiful corner,' where family icons are placed. Guests entering a house customarily honor the icons in the corner by crossing themselves before the objects. An oil lamp is set near the icons and is lit daily, according to Orthodox tradition."
Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Icons are not worshiped but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As a focus for prayers and meditation for believers, icons serve as "windows into heaven."
