ANTIQUE LADDER-BACK SHAKER ROCKING CHAIR. Front posts in curly maple, double box stretcher, original rockers, three graduated slats with nice simple turned finials. PROVENANCE: From a fine downeast Maine home. SIZE: 40” to top of finials x 16-1/2” across front posts. CONDITION: Rush seat is missing some rush and one back leg where it meets the rocker has repair. Shaker chair missing tape seat and one stretcher rung is replaced; decorated chair with darkened finish but you can make out foliate decoration under the grunge.

This fine example of Shaker craftsmanship has the rare features of printed paper labels identifying its use in the Church Family Laundry at Canterbury, one stating "L.12." on the back of one slat, and another "Laundry No. 12." on the inside of the back seat rail. It is a scarce survivor with its original dry finish and cane seat.
