A Modern Gothic Walnut Hanging Cabinet, late 19th c., attributed to Kimbel and Cabus, New York, the pediment centered by a Minton tile, the doors ornamented by brass strapwork hinges and paneled with tiles designed by John Moyr Smith depicting Galcactus and Death of Harold, tenoned sides also inset with tiles, height 39 in., width 27 1/2 in., depth 8 1/4 in. $2500/3500 Note: Kimbel and Cabus favored Minton tiles to adorn many cabinets, and interestingly tiles designed by John Moyr Smith (1839-1912) seem to be exclusively chosen for incorporation into Kimbel and Cabus furniture. As Minton's most celebrated tile designer, Smith won the grand prize at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. He attended the Glasgow School of Art, as did Gothic design innovator Christopher Dresser. Smith later worked at Dresser's London studio. Reference: Stapleton. John Moyr Smith, p. 61.

An American Modern Gothic Walnut and Minton Tile Hanging Cabinet c. 1875 attributed to Kimbel and Cabus New York with notched pediment crenellated gallery each door ornamented with brass strapwork hinges wooden pegs and centered by a Minton tile by John Moyr Smith depicting "Alfred" and "Edy. and Elgiua" from the English history series c. 1872 the sides with reeded panels height 29 3/4 in. width 25 1/2 in. depth 8 3/4 in. Note: John Moyr Smith (1839-1912) produced numerous tile designs for Minton tile works and was favored exclusively by New York's Kimbel and Cabus. Educated at the Glasgow School of Art along with Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Christopher Dresser; the latter employed Smith at his London studio. The cabinet's overall design relates to the early work of William Bourgess Philip Webb and William Morris' creative circle who all drew inspiration from medieval history architecture and decorative arts. A related cabinet sold in these rooms February 7 2009 lot 280.
