Fine Classical Gilt, Vert Antique, and Rosewood Caryatid Table: attributed to Duncan Phyfe, 1815-1820, figured rosewood top with brass inlay and satinwood banding, brass inlaid edge, opening to a felt lined playing surface above a gilt bronze mounted and brass inlaid rosewood frieze, carved gilt and vert antique painted caryatid support, back with leaf carved and fluted column supports, on rosewood veneered and bronze mounted base set on carved gilt and vert antique and animal paw feet, with leaf carved knees and brass casters, interior till with early and probably original marbled paper lining, poplar, ash, and white pine secondary, 29-1/4 x 35-3/4 x 18 in. Note: This rare table is illustrated and discussed in McInnis and Leath, ?Beautiful Specimens, Elegant Patterns: New York Furniture for the Charleston Market, 1810-1840? (Chipstone, 1996) p. 149-150. McInnis and Leath note that it is one from a pair that descended in the Ravenel-Frost family. ÿBanks family members recall William purchasing the table from his Cousin, Olive Pringle Brown, who also lived in Newnan. It was said to have come from the Pringle mansion in Charleston. Among Charleston?s most prominent families, the Ravenel, Frost and Pringle families, ÿresting a web or connections and of possible histories for this table. It is also illustratedÿin Katherine Gross Farnham, ?Living with Antiques: The Gordon-Banks House in the Georgia Piedmont, ? The MagazineÿAntiques, ÿ102, no. 3 (September 1972): p. 444. , and in Fairbanks, ÿAmerican Furniture 1620 to the Presentÿ(New York 1981) p. 266. ÿA closely related pair of caryatid card tables attributed to Phyfe were formerly in the Westervelt-Warner Museum of American Art and the Warner Collection of Gulf States Paper Corporation, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and were sold at Christie's, New York, September 25, 2013, lot #101 for $255, 000. One of these tables is illustrated in Peter Kenny, Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York, page 85, figure 95, with an attribution to Duncan Phyfe. However, the present table is distinguished by its expensive rosewood veneers and satinwood banding that are not found on the Westerveltÿpair. ; Provenance: By descent through the Ravenel, Frost, and Pringle families of Charleston, South Carolina. William purchased the table from his cousin Olive Pringle Brown, who lived in Newnan, probably in 1968/1969. The Estate of William N. Banks, Jr. , Newnan, Georgia Condition Banks family members recall this table being ?in the black? when William purchased it. A receipt in William Banks? files records probable conservation work done on this table by Veleba and Hrouban of New York in May 1969, probably around the time of the purchase of the table. The receipt records restorations to gold leaf and brass hardware as well as repairing and refinishing. The table appears to retain some of its original painted surface, however, particularly the back legs and column supports. There is some scattered pest damage to legs and supports with areas of flaking to paint and gilding and surface distress. The ormolu mount to the skirt is apparently a replacement, as there are two unused holes in the skirt. There are veneer cracks to the rosewood top, a break and repair at the tip of one wing, minor sun fading and finish distress to the pedestal base, and fading and distress to the felt playing surface.

The Waring Family American Gothic Carved Rosewood Center Table c. 1845 after a design by Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892) New York original hexagonal black marble top conforming skirt with ripple molding and acorn pendants cluster supports with foliate collars shaped plinth with trefoil terminals casters height 30 3/4 in. width 40 1/2 in. depth 35 3/4 in. Provenance: Descended in the Waring Family Mobile Alabama and New Orleans Louisiana. This table is documented in the Historic American Buildings Survey photograph of the Waring home 351 Government Street by E.W. Russell dated March 14 1935 (photo ALA-19). Family history records this table in place soon after the 1846 completion of the house. The table was moved to New Orleans in the mid-20th c. by Waring descendants. Note: The design source for this table appears in Alexander Jackson Downing's illustration "Drawing Room at Kenwood Gothic Style" (figure 179) in his influential 1850 The Architecture of Country Houses and provides documentation for Alexander Jackson Davis' (1803-1892) architectural commission for Joel Rathbone's 1842 Hudson River Valley villa Kenwood. Of note is the similarity of the lot offered here to a table in the Kenwood illustration which is likely of Davis' design. Eight tables related to this lot include: a rosewood table bearing a "Mr. J. Rathbone/Kenwood" label at the High Museum Atlanta (acc.1983.190) that was also exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston in 1976; a table from the Davis-designed villa "Belmead" built for Philip St. George Cocke in Powhatan County Virginia in 1845 and now at Andalusia; a table at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (acc. 1981.402); a table in the University of Utah collection; a table in the Terian collection illustrated in Feld. In Pointed Style p. 82-83 fig. 38; a table illustrated in Fitzgerald. Three Centuries of American Furniture p. 211 fig. 4; a table sold at Christie's New York as lot 530 January 16 1998; and a table from a New Orleans collection sold in these rooms as lot 91 November 20 2010. The table offered here is the only example known to furnish a home in the Gulf South. This discovery is not only a testament to the transmission of Gothic taste throughout the United States in the 1840s but also indicates Mobile's preeminence among contemporary taste makers. The unity of Gothic design and variation of detail among the examples listed above demonstrate the ambitions of the cabinetmaker and the caliber of his clientele. Provenance: Homewood, Natchez, Mississippi. Homewood was built by David Hunt, a wealthy planter and businessman in Adams County, Mississippi. He built this palatial home as a wedding gift to his daughter and named it "Homewood". The house took five years to construct and was completed in 1860. The house burned to the ground in 1947. This lot is accompanied by two hand-written letters, ca. 1865, discussing the fate of these chairs and other furniture, as well as, a framed image of "Homewood" before it burned. Natchez June 2, 1865 Maj. Gen. Davidson General, I would respectfully ask attention to the following application - My wife is the aunt of Mr. W. T. Martin, a loyal resident of Adams County, Miss. She took charge of & raised Mr. Martin from his infancy. In January, 1854, she married William T. Martin lately in the confederate service. She became entitled by the will of his father, the late William C. Conner to separate property mainly in cash of the value of about $30,000. In 1854 his mother deeded to her a piece of land about 1-1/2 miles from the city of Natchez. Upon which her husband, for the most part with her means, erected & furnished a dwelling house and highly improved the place. In July, 1863, the U.S. forces occupied Natchez. Mrs. Martin was driven from her home by the violence & insults of Federal officers & soldiers (on picket duty in front of her house) & of her own servants accompanied by soldiers. There was no white males in the place except for her infant son. Her family consisted of five small children. The elder eight years old. She moved her family & most of her furniture to her mothers place, adjoining her own. About the 1st of March 1864, the Provost Marshall, an officer whose name was Walker, came with Col. Wallace of the 4th Union Cavalry & some soldiers & took away part of her furniture. A few days afterwords other officers & soldiers carried off more. & but for the active influence of myself would have left Mrs. Martin & family without a bed of her own to sleep on. The object of taking the furniture was stated by the officers to be to furnish the quarters of some of the officers of the U.S. Army. When the first seizure of furniture was made, Mrs. Martin informed the officers making it that the furniture was her property & not her husbands. & her mother Mrs. Conner called immediately upon the Commandant of the Post Col. Johnson, & informed him that the furniture was her daughters & not Gen. Martins & he told him it was taken with his approbation, & he could take any furniture in Natchez. Lt. Parks assistant Provost Marshall took away part of the furniture. Mrs. Martin by the laws of Mississippi is entitled to hold real & personal property separately from her husband, and not subject to his debts or default. Her residence and this furniture were so held. This furniture was purchased with her means & her husband, I am informed, could not legally sell it without her consent. She is now deprived of her home & the means of furnishing another. A list of the furniture taken from her is here with furnished. Some part of it is in the hands of Col. Wallace who is in Natchez - some in possession of Capt. Peres Q. M. As I have reason to believe- none of it is recorded in or in the possession of the Treasury agency here. So far as I know the U.S. Government has never been benefitted one dollar by this unauthorized seizure of a non-combatants property - Property too, not fit for military uses. In Mrs. Martins behalf, I respectfully ask that a strict investigation may be made into the conduct of the officers seizing this furniture & that they may be required to return it & compensate the owner for its use & any damage it may have sustained. I ask this the more confidently because I believe the present commanding officers here will not permit acts of injustice or violence on the part of soldiers or officers, towards defenseless women & children - or their property - Respectfully Submitted Spencer Wood and Dr. Wood, The furniture I received from the Pro. Marshal & A.Q.M.in the early part of last year, among which were a few articles belonging to Genl. Martin C.S.A. was turned over to the A.Q.M. in the fore part of Aug. last. Except some that were delivered to Dr. Luce and adjt. Cregs 4th Union Cav. The adjt. turned over what he got to the A.Q.M. In Oct. last. and I believe the Dr. turned over what he got to Major Muciple and by the Major to Capt. Mersinun and by him to the Treasury Dept. That is all I can learn about the articles except the following which are now in the house where I live. (1) one cottage bedstead (1) marble top washstand (1) card table (2) two chairs - for these I am responsible to the Treasury Dept. Very Respectfully Mr. M Wallace Natchez Miss May 26th 1865
